Why do people say...

that the Ford Mustang was named after the P-51 Fighter/Bomber plane? If that was the case, then why did Ford use an equus ferus callabus as the emblem on the Mustang? Why not use the plane as the emblem? And even if it was named after the aerial vehicle, it technically is still named after the horse...because the bomber plane itself was named after the horse. Right?? Just some food for thought on a rainy and boring Sunday evening...anyone care to take a bite?

It was technically named after the fighter plane, or atleast according to some articles that I have read. But it also was named Mustang because of the free nature of the wild horses. Ford was trying to embrace a younger generation, who were "free" and "wild" and it just so happens that it drew from both name sakes...

It was the plane... but it was easier to associate the horse with the car in respect to what AZ said.

This is true. And the horse emblem was just a representation...quite symbolic of the times. Even more symbolic considering that Mustangs are wild free untamed horse and flight is considered as a form of freedom. Along with the rebel attitude that the youth of that generation displayed. And owning a Mustang was considered a bad boy image, more so than any other pony car. I kinda wish I had been around to experience those times. Even tho the big three are all back and the retro thing is all the rage, it doesn't quite have that same feel that must have been prevalent back then.

Yes, it seems that most people that buy new "Retro" Mustangs are people who bought them back in the 60's, and are trying to relive the times.

I wish I was around back then too.

Oh well. It's the same but different for our generation. Imports are the big players now, but I'd venture to say that the feeling of rebellion is a little better when you're blasting the music of 8 cylinders trying to burn the tires off the rear end of a Mustang versus chirping 2nd gear in a Honduh...
