World Class T-5 vs. Cobra Tranny

I have the option to install either a World Class T-5 or for $50 more install a Cobra tranny. What's the difference between these two tranny's?

I'm no expert, and it's been a while since I looked into the difference. From what I remember, the Cobra trans has some heaver-duty internals, and is rated to handle about 330lb/ft of torque, compared to 305 for a WC.

I know someone here knows for sure though. You could also try searching, I know I've seen this issue come up in the past.

If I rememeber correctly, the cobra has a captured bearing between the input and output shafts besides the shafts to match. It essentially increases the torque capasity to 330 instead of the WC 300. Other than that I think it's pretty much the same tranny. For 50 bucks more I would go for the cobra tranny if that is the difference.

The Cobra T-05 is not 330 ft-lbs...it's only 310 ft-lbs rated. The 330 ft-lbs is the Z-spec T-5 which is not the same as the Cobra T-5.

The difference is a revised pocket bearing that reduces flex allowing you 10 more ft-lbs over the standard 300 ft-lbs of a 90-93 spec world class t-5.

The 85-89 WC T-5 was rated at 265 ft-lbs. So ask what version of the WC they are selling you.

If it's the 300 ft-lb version, not much of a diff for $50

If it's the 265....i would go for it

I googled that, and most of what I found said the same thing, that before '90 they were rated at 265 lb-ft.

It still seems really weird to me that Ford would put a transmission rated for a max 265lb-ft of torque behind an engine that makes 300lb-ft of torque in stock form. It seems like it would be asking for major warranty issues...

Jeff, if you're familiar with Tip-in Retard that came about on the 94-95 GT's (in both autos and T5's), you'll see your logic was not unnoticed.

So, you're saying the T5-Z was never used in a Cobra from the factory?

That is correct. The 2.95 1st T-5 Z-spec T-5 never came in a production vehicle.


The Cobra uses a 3.35 gearset with a revised pocket bearing to give it the extra 10 ft-lbs.

Two different transmissions.
