Would a King Cobra clutch be good enough for my car?

IMO yes it would be enough, that and what would you rather have break a rear end, tranny, or just have a $175 dollar clutch go bad.

A stock clutch COULD be "good enough" if you babied it. Would I use a stock clutch? Hell no! I'd get something better then a king Cobra. They are just slighly better then a stock replacement.

At the track it is kind of pointless to "baby" a clutch if your going for a quicker E.T./mph anyways...lol.

I had a King Cobra with a similar type powered car as you and it would slip just a tad...I now have the CF Stage II...but it was a great clutch all around...

I thought the HD clutches were slighty better than stock and the King Cobra is 10% better than the HD.

Anyways, yeah I plan to hit the track maybe once or twice a year. Nothing serious, I just dont want it to slip. Maybe I should just stick with a centerforce? If so which kind? price?

dont bother dumping money into a clutch if this one is not slipping, even if it starts to slip after a few trips to the track then get another one. Dont waste your money and get another one now if this one is treating you right.

I have centerforce dual friction that was installed in 1996. It's finally starting to slip now (under full boost) so I need a repalcement soon...

The King Cobra is supposed to have the same holding power as the HD with 10% less pedal effort. If that is what you mean by 10% better, then yes. If you mean 10% more holding power, then no, it doesn't have it.

I went with the Centerforce Stage II pressure plate and bought the disc and CF TOB with it...It is around $300 dollars total.

My reply depends on the tranny that you have. If it is a stock trans then I would run a "lighter" clutch like a king cobra or single friction McLeod. If your tranny can handle it (tremec, g-force, etc) then I think you can safely step up into the heavier clutches. I have had the following clutches: Zoom, CF DF, Spec stage 1, and currently my McLeod. I cannot say enough about the McLeod. Simply amazing. This came about since I blew my stock tranny out with a CF DF. The clutch didn't give at all so the tranny did.

I think I got my original CF from summit. Ran around $300 for a DF.

I got mine from summit racing...free shipping

Here is the part numbers you will need...

Pressure plate # is CF360057
Clutch disc # is CF381021

You can use any throwout bearing...

Also, check into a SPEC stage III clutch. I had problems with my centerforce slipping at the track. I had to go with a SPEC stage 4 with mine though.

I would say you would expect to see a $200-$300 dollar job (maybe more)...depends on who/how they do it.

S351RAnimal - A spec stage 4 isn't even close to needed for his setup and will be almost completely undriveable for a daily driver. A centerforce stage II would be as far as he would need to go...a Stage III would be to on/offish to want to drive...and will tear the tranny up pretty quickly...

I drive with a stage 3 spec every day, no problem.

That said, I think that a stage 2 would be all that he needs. I agree that a stage 4 is too much for a stock transmisson.

last yr a friend and myself put in my SPEC II on our own and it wasent to hard at all took a few hrs to get it out and the new one in. Later on that summer I was at a ford dealership talking to a friend that worked there and for the hell of it asked the service area how much a clutch swap would be. They told me it would take 4 hrs and about $700-$800, I kinda laughed and said it dident take that long w/ the two of us doing it on jack stands in a garage and you guys have lifts and it takes you 4 hrs, he dident like that to much.

Hmm, so now my options are Spec Stage II, King Cobra, or Center Force Dual Friction. So basically we have:

King Cobra: Good price, well known name, but might possibly be too weak and may slip under boost?

Spec Stage II: Good price, now so well known, but will definitely hold my power and may possibly break my tranny?

Center Force Dual Friction: Expensive price, well known name, will definitely hold my power, and be more graceful on my tranny?

decisions decisions.....

By the way, the local shop is doing it for $150. This seems to be the rate for clutch installs. I have done two by myself, and they werent hard at all. However in my older years I would prefer to just pay someone to do it.
