There is a member here that is selling a New (out of a 96) Cobra motor with a centri S/C. My question is would you swap it into a 02 GT. The price is great and it comes with the balance of a 3yr/36k warranty from Ford.

I was also looking at the Whipple (Sallen ) S/C the complete package is $4499.00. I have the 4.10's in the car now and you guys have said that with a twin screw (oops) blower that my gears are too tall.

Just a big decision for me and I would aprreciate your input.

Thanks in advance
DJ

The swap would be a lot of work. wiring harness, PCM, etc. If you have the time and place to do it...go for it.

Make sure the warranty can transfer to you...and in writing!

If the warranty does transfer...good luck in making a claim with the centri-supercharger attached. If Ford can determine or make the slightest assumption that damage was caused by a supercharger...you're screwed or in for a very long discussion. (The Magnusson-Moss Warranty act may not apply to you with the S/C installed. Read the Ford Warranty carefully.)

eh?

Read your post a few times and still didn't get it.

So the motor already has a blower?

If so why buy another one and FYI a WHIPPLE is NOT a Roots blower it is a twin screw, its like saying you have a diesel when you meant petrol.

IMO

What will you gain? I'm not to familar on the spec of a 96 Cobra engine, is it aluminium? DOHC?

By the sound of it, it will require a fair amount of work to install. If its DOHC you won't really get that much more power potential in the real world. And if its an aluminum block then it probably has less capability for FI than the cast iron SOHC units.

My adice would be spend the money rebuilding your current motor (forged and such, maybe lower the CR a tad) and then by a KB 1.7 run it at 14psi which should be safe with a lower CR and have yourself an everyday 500rwhp car.

However its not my car, so make the decision yourself based on your own knowledge, understanding and want.

Have fun and lets us know what you decide.

96s are aluminum block DOHCs, definitely inherently weaker than the 03-04 DOHCs for boosted applications, but would still respond better to FI than a SOHC, i would just worry about block strength

A common misconception. The '96-98 DOHC Teksid blocks are good for 700-800 rwhp, putting it on par w/ the iron blocks, but lighter. The weakness lies in the internals.

Exactly. Ford switched on the '03-04 Cobras to the iron block as a cost savings, not for strength. The aluminum block is equal to if not even stronger than the iron and 70# lighter.

The teksid blocks can take over 1000hp, they are not a "weak" block like the WAP block thats comes in the 01 cobras and mach 1s.

there is no way that an aluminium block is stronger than a cast iron one of the same design - it just goes against the laws of physics

As for weight, I bet a DOHC aluminium is lighter than the cast iron counter part, BUT what does it compare to a SOHC cast iron block. My bet is there won't be a whole lot in it. As there is a lot more metal in the DOHC units.

At first glance, it looks as though SVT simply slapped a supercharger on the old V-8, but there are several vital modifications to support the new muscle. Most important, the aluminum block was swapped for one cast in iron. Testing with the light-alloy block allegedly was disastrous (engineers dodge direct questions about just how bad it was), and the iron block is simply described as a "known quantity."

That was Ford's cover story. MT obviously bought it.

Leaving the bought off media aside, how many people run more power than a stock 03 Cobra with the Teksid block with no problems? Thousands...

really where?

I'm serious not ripping the piss, but 400+bhp Mustangs are more the rarity than the norm, and most I've seen on this board with big BHP are s/c 03/4 Cobra's and SOHC's with blowers.

Hermann of HP by Hermann (his race car was was just featured in one of the mustang mags) just took out his old engine and will be going with a 96-98 Cobra Aluminum block, fully built bottom end, and KB 2.4. Cant wait to see what kind of power that thing makes

Your reading the wrong boards. Mahovitz (SP?) is running 6's with a Teksid block. At 2300#, how much HP would you suspect he is making to be running 6's at 200+mph in the 1320's.

Other than the Ford GT block, the Teksid is the strongest AL block in the current Ford Lineup.

I do have a question to the original poster, how is this a new 96 engine? It would probably have to be a factory reman. and you should check to see if it is indeed a 96 block or a WAP block.

'96 Cobra Engine + Centri S/C + 4.10's in an '02 GT = Cat's @$$! I'd do it in a heartbeat.

SOHC iron block......DOHC iron block = Same damn thing. Heads, timing cover and intake are the only main differences and the aluminum block is still lighter.

do it. lots of great reasons in this thread to do it. also, with the DOHC, you'll have a little more RPMs to play with as well. If the price is really great and you have a some more money to throw at this project, think about some forged internals what type of s/c is on it DJ? does it begin with a "N" and end with a "ovi"?????

I meant as an entire assembly.

The Mod series of engines are all rather porky in size and weight terms, a DOHC cast iron unit from an 03 Cobra weighs almost the same as my Jaguar V12, and that has half as many cylinders again!!!!

Seriously, what I meant was a normal 2v SOHC from a GT weighs less than the DOHC from an 03 Cobra as an entire unit. Although there would be a weight saving from the actual block if made from aluminium (96 Cobra) it still has 4 cams and much bigger heads in area of metal.

What is the weight difference between them as a complete assembly?
