Automatic transmissions are nothing like manual transmissions internally. On a manual when you put it in gear, it is actually in gear, while in an auto power is transfered through ring gears which are held in different combo's to provide gear. When there is no pressure to the bands, the gears are not held, allowing them to all freewheel, no power transfer.
