For clarification, I'm not trying to persuade you to change your mind on liking the II, but it'd be nice to not be called a dumbass for my choice in doing so:

The story for my attraction to them dates back to the early 80s and a story I could share about my dad. It's a sentimental thing, and it gets really old having to listen to people bash it over and over and over again. Every shortcoming it had could be remedied just like with any other early Mustang. In fact, it could outperform most earlier generation Mustangs just as the later Fox cars could be (and were) improved upon to outperform the II.

Don’t confuse clueless with dumbass. I drive a Ford Fairmont. There are scores of Ford loyalists that think that is one ugly sonofabitch. I’m sure there are several here that think i'm clueless for liking them. That said, i never take offense when somebody bashes me for liking a particular car...it is after all just a car. If you think that black car looks good, more power to you.

Naw, that black car doesn't look good, mine does though.

That one has some issues and isn't tastefully done. Way too many things going on. Kinda goes back to what I said about people needing a psychiatric evaluation. It's almost as bad as some of the body kits people decide to put on SN95 and later cars.

And this one's probably a V6......

No, no no dude..they're not trolling..theyre trying to convince me that I'm wrong.

A nearly impossible feat.

Firstly, unless you at least 55,...you cannot speak with authority on the current subject... ( whatever that is in this thread).

The mid 70’s was a terrible time in the decade, that only got worse as the years went on. Disco started, almost everybody looked like ass,.. Bell bottom pants, platform shoes, leisure suits made out of polyester, long stupid feathered hair, Mike and greg Brady getting afros even though they were as white as a piece of paper, Long lines to get gas, a 55 mph national interstate speed limits, CJ Mc Call singing songs about truckers, and CB radios...Kiss was popular, and there was even talk about renaming a high school in the midwest Kiss high..Cocaine was just starting to make the rounds as “ the” drug in the clubs...

The Ford engineers,....While Listening to Donna Summer, all sporting their recently added Afro-Perms, wearing 2” platform shoes in their green polyester leisure suits, Stoned Bat sht crazy on Coke after having been up for 3 days straight penned the first rendition of the rehashed Pinto they called the 1974 Mustang II.

Who can blame them for building such a flaming piece of sht? They didn’t know what they were doing....

By the time the late 70’s came along, these guys were so hagged out, all the creative talent they had left had dwindled to rehashing long dead 60’s era namesakes....Since they were hobbled by the “energy crisis” and couldn’t possibly get anything resembling a muscle car from the days gone by, the solution was to cover the car in decals......Mach 1, Cobra II,....the more decals, the faster it looked....ending in the ultimate Joke of the late 70’s....the 1978 King Cobra.

Now...How can you blame those Coked up, Disco dancing, fake Afro headed engineers at ford for coming up with a turd like a Mustang II?

It took a guy Ford had pidgeon holed to Ford Europe to save ford USA from just disco dancing themselves to death. Jack Telnack came up with the Fox Platform and brought Ford back from the brink....the longest running version of any mustang to this date.

That's a good story Mike, hell, it's the most original II insult I've heard in twenty years (and the wordiest), and that's saying something.

Its timeline has no basis in reality, but it's still a real good story. I like it.

The truth is, the II's roots date to 1968, when Anna Muccioli took the floor at the annual Ford shareholders' meeting and said the following: “I have a ’65 Mustang and I don’t like what’s happening. They’re blowing them up. Why can’t you just leave a sports car small? I mean, you keep blowing them up and starting with another little one, blow that one up and start another one. I mean, why don’t you just leave them?” That got the ball rolling, and when Lee Iacocca took over as president of Ford in 1970, he assembled the team, and it was a done deal by 1971. The designer? This guy: https://www.carbodydesign.com/galle...usive-images-from-ford-designer-dick-nesbitt/ (No afro, I'm afraid.)

Now the fox, on the other hand, was designed in... let me look this up... 1976. ( http://www.mustangandfords.com/news/1310-the-fox-body-mustang-evolution ) Must've been all those afro-headed coked-up Donna-Summer-loving engineers Jack Telnack hired.

Wasnt this thread originally because @General karthief took offense that I said that an 85 Gt was slow? And now here we are dragging the Mustang II in, and back out of the mud....

What did the II come with motor wise? And 79-84?
Mustang II:

1974: 2.3L 4-cylinder and 2.8L V6
1975: 2.3L 4-cylinder, 2.8L V6, 302 V8
1976: 2.3L 4-cylinder, 2.8L V6, 302 V8
1977: 2.3L 4-cylinder, 2.8L V6, 302 V8
1978: 2.3L 4-cylinder, 2.8L V6, 302 V8 (302 called a "5.0" for the first time in the 1978 King Cobra)

Fox:
1979: 2.3L 4-cylinder, 2.3L 4-cylinder with a draw-through carburetor, 3.3L I6, 5.0L V8 (which was identical to the engine used the previous year)
1980: 2.3L 4-cylinder, 2.3L 4-cylinder with a draw-through carburetor, 3.3L I6, 4.2L V8
1981: 2.3L 4-cylinder, 2.3L 4-cylinder with a draw-through carburetor, 3.3L I6, 4.2L V8
1982: 2.3L 4-cylinder, 2.3L 4-cylinder with a draw-through carburetor (Canada only), 3.3L I6, 302 V8
1983: 4-cylinder, 2.3L 4-cylinder with EFI, 3.8L V6, 302 V8
1984: 4-cylinder, 2.3L 4-cylinder with EFI (with big improvements, used in the SVO), 3.8L V6, 302 V8

Here's the REAL crazy thing. The 302 in the 75-79 Mustangs? Was almost completely unchanged from the 2-bbl 302 used in the '73 Mustang. That one little anemic smogged-down 2-bbl 302 soldiered on through three generations of Mustang.

Yes.

True.

No, I'm still gonna come poke my nose into your build thread, and randomly invite feedback from you I probably won't like into mine. (Hey, we've surprised each other before on that one.)

Don't make a promise you can't keep. It's okay, as I said, I really do have a thick skin about it, I'm entertained my 99.99999999% of the crap that gets thrown at me by II-haters. I really did like your story, it made me laugh, even knowing it had no basis in the truth. I couldn't help but picture some nerdy white guy with a fro, looking like Napoleon Dynamite, snorting a line of coke and going to town on his sketchbook.

It wasn't intentional, just that this one was exactly what I was thinking of for a reply. It's unfortunate that it's a political figure, I have absolutely no desire to get into anything political, especially on a Mustang forum.

Interesting. Ya, i went and checked some on google. Not familiar with the II really at all. But at least it had a 5.0 option.

It kinda, bearly. Reminda me of a ae86. Which is a corolla, i think. 1986 and they were only in japan, Maybe not. Idk. Point being, made me think what one would look like as a drift car setup. It would need 15" rims, and probably custom suspension in the rear to get it low as possible and it might look cool to me. Not sure.

Well, it's autocross instead of drifting, but you get the idea:

Alcino Azevedo: SCCA San Diego Region CAM Champion — AutoXandTrack

Alcino Azevedo has won countless autocross events with his Mustang II. Learn more about the three time regional champion and his views on autocross.
www.autoxandtrack.com
Alcino's car is pretty damned legendary in it's own right. It even ended up being a feature car in Popular Hot Rodding magazine in the 2000s, where it laid down a better number on the skidpad than a new 'vette.

There's no shame in any car losing to a Neon SRT-4. Those cars are the most devious thing Chrysler ever dreamed up.

They literally looked at the ugly, deplorable, horrid little bastard that was the Neon and said "what if we added boost, cut out weight, managed to care even less about reliability and build quality, and then got nasty about it?" then they did it. Then the tuner crowd couldn't leave them alone. I've driven 700 horsepower Audis, I've driven 662 horsepower Shelbys, I've driven 650 horsepower Z06 Corvettes... and the ONE car I've ever driven that's ever made "poo come out" as Jeremy Clarkson so eloquently put it was a heavily modified SRT-4. Those cars are absolutely bat crazy.

That SRT turbo Dodge Caliber....and the turbo PT Cruiser are all a force to recon with. It's a shame they break so easy though. Quality wasn't the mission ( lil' piles of poo ), they wanted to kick @as and they did it with a little effort.

The mustang ll is my least favorite car....unless it's a cobra.....then it moves up a few notches. They have grown a little on me over the years....and chicks like'em. At a local car show last year there were bunch of college girls taking picks with one. Never even looked toward my 19 ecoboost. The only woman I ever attracted with a mustang is my wife....and she hits like a grown man.

The SRT Caliber, and PT Turbo were their own little bastards in their own way, but the SRT Neon... that car was maximum don't give a in the smallest package available. So dangerous, so unreliable, so fun, so tuneable, and so damned quick. Even Hellcats are more sane than those little bastards. Don't get me wrong, the Hellcat cars are better in every way, but a lot of thought went into things like safety, control, build quality, traction, etc on those, SRT didn't give a damn about any of that when they went to town on the Neon.
