Engine Engine rebuild suggestions

Hi,

I have an 89 Mustang GT, manual. I've owned it for about 10 years. The engine leaks oil (I see it on the ground). Also periodically need to add antifreeze. I've been wanting to pull the engine and at the very least re-gasket it. Make a father/son project of it as well. Ideally, while the engine is out, would like to give it some more power. Was thinking of changing out the heads for something aluminum and would love to change the cams for something a little loopy sounding. Not planing to race, but would like the extra power. So here are the questions:

1. I thought the heads they sell online are plug and play, but you seemed to need to measure and change the pushrods, check valve clearance? I've done auto fixes before, but never actually pulled an engine, will be my first time. Are there any known heads/cam combo for the 302 stock engine that I can just purchase and install and know nothing will break?

2. I see heads for sale for like $1000+ per head. And when you're done with the extras, you're $3-4k in for just top-end engine parts. I may have been asleep for a while, but I bought the whole car for $4500. Paying that much in just engine addons is nuts. Are there any sources you know of where I can buy the new parts I need, heads, lifters, rods, cams, lower/upper manifold and gaskets and be around $2k or less? I've seen like AFR aluminum heads on eBay for about $600 with good reviews.

Finally, I know there's probably an ideal way of rebuilding an old engine-- take it all apart, send it to the shop to get cleaned, measured, honed and so on. I don't have the money to do that. The engine runs and the car drive, at the very least, I just want it not to leak and it's been my bucket list item to pull and engine and clean it up.

Your advice is appreciated.

Thank you!
Julian
You need the proper seats for your heads. Think about putting upgraded value springs in. P heads have weak springs and are known to float. I run dual valve springs on my P heads.

Electrical Car dosen't run without jumping the EEC IV test port

Update...

I checked for the location of the gray/red wire on the ECU. It is pin 46. I even double checked the color at the ECU by pulling up the black harness cover at the ECU and confirmed the gray/red color is there at pin 46.

I then checked for continuity between pin 46 and pins 30 & 60. There is continuity between 46 and 30, but nothing between 46 and 60.

Unfortunately, I'm not sure what that tells me. Does that mean I have a bad engine harness?

Thanks again guys for everything!

Progress Thread A new FB conversion for bbettto

I'm looking at post #81 and #82 at the fastback roof structure completed. I have a 1965 fastback body that the bottom half of it is rust out rotten.
If I want to install the fastback structure to the coupe, the same way that you have joined the new parts to the coupe donor, it looks like I would need to strip the old roof skin off. It is hale damaged anyway. This would allow me to sandblast all of the original structure that Ford never primed. Am I thinking about this correctly? Also, it appears that the Dynacorn roof skin is a pretty good looking piece. I will need Dynacorn quarters too.

Roll bar

I think it depends on what rules the track goes by. If they use NHRA rules, then I think you only need a roll bar if you run quicker than 13.50. Again, I think, not know for sure. I have no idea what IHRA, or any other sanctioning body's, rules are.

If it's stock (or close to it), I don't think you're gonna run that fast though.

If it's modified, just tell tech it runs high 13's and you should be able to get at least one pass in. If it runs faster than 13.50, they'll just boot ya off the track!

Paint and Body SEM Hot Rod black for foxbody trim?

I know everyone uses the sem trim black on these cars since it’s an exact match, and that’s what I purchased as well. However, a buddy of mine has a brand new can of sem hot rod black which he offered to spray on all my trim with his air gun. He told me that’d be better than the rattle can.

Has anyone used the sem hot rod black that can let me know how it looks? It says it’s a satin black just like the trim black. Is it a color match for these cars?
