can you guys clear some fuel pump info up for me?

im getting confused after reading all the fuel pump threads. i need to set up my fuel system for the blower going in comming up.

was going to get the cobra pumps and bap. some say the gt pump is better.

not really my questtion though.

i am trying to figure out the actual set up of these pumps?:shrug:

the cobra pump is a duel pump right? why are people saying they run twim cobra pumps, are they running 2 duel cobra pumps? or are they running 1 duel cobra pump?

not only that but the duel pump fits in the stock gt basket so what do they do to modify the tank to run 2 duel pumps if that is what they are doing? do they use 2 baskets?

i know this seems stupid but i got really confused on this as i dont know how our tanks are set up to begin with.

can u guys clear this up for me?
 
come on, i know you guys know how our systems are set up. i read all the threads that came up on the search but not being mechanically inclined, i just got more confused.
 
I've never heard of anyone running 4 pumps. Dual cobra pumps = 2 pumps.

1 ford GT pump outflows 1 cobra pump. Possibly 2 cobra pumps, but I don't have the flow numbers for the GT pump.

The GT tanks are not baffled the cobra pumps are. That is why some people switch. You can however make baffles out of a plastic gas can for the GT tank.

I had a bad experience with a BAP burning out on me under WOT. I won't reccomend them to anyone else.
 
Aparently 1 GT40 pump is better than 2 cobra pumps. I would rather have the cobra tank/pumps because the GT40 pump has to be rigged to fit in the stock basket. And if it sucks the gas too fast, your screwed. Most people can run BAP and Focus bump, but the cobra pumps would be the better/ more safe choice.

wow, the bap burned out? thats bad.

the think is i dont think the cobra pump alone will be good for my power level, will it? my mechanic said well go with just the pump and see how it dows. then if we need the bap i should get that. i dont want to worry about it burning out though.

there has to be a better way to make the fuel system safe, isnt there?

btw, i should make anywere from 450-500rwhp. once i get my boost to 15 which im basically guessing this time around, i should have about 530 at the wheels. that is what i have to support.....advice?

03/04 Cobra set up = 2 pumps in the basket in a baffled tank
GT = 1 pump in the basket in a non-baffled tank

I believe the tanks and baskets are interchangeable

if fuel is important with your set up, and it is...get the baffled tank....with under 1/4 tank in the GT, fuel can slosh around and you could run dry regardless of the single hi-flo pump

the Cobra set up is good to about 500ish rwhp.....we've got guys up here hitting 560rwhp with a Whipple on a 4V and a stock Cobra fuel set up - aka no BAP....but they're on the limit with fuel

I had an SVT focus pump in my GT basket and tank with a 20amp BAP for my KB set up

I've since swapped to a Cobra tank....dual Cobra pumps in the basket and no BAP....system works flawless....but I'm running small boost...350rwhp....but it's safe

a 40amp BAP is the one you need with the Cobra pumps - if necessary
 
thanks 2000blk, thats a lot of goot info! i will try to get away with the cobra pumps without the bap for now.

what effects the amount of fuel needed? is it the hp or the higher boost? because the only reason i think im gonna maybe go over 500 is because of the stroker engine. i guess its the power level right?

Actually what effects the amount of fuel used is called "Brake Specific Fuel Comsumption" or BSFC. It is basically a measurement of how effecient your engine is. For example, a N/A engine making 350hp will require less fuel than a supercharged engine making 350hp. That is probably a little more than you wanted to know, but to answer your question. Power level is directly related to BSFC, so the more power you make, the more fuel it is going to take.

Here is some more detailed info if you are interested:
Fuel Pump Sizing
To achieve proper fuel delivery, you must select the right fuel pump for your vehicle. In most cases, where the engine has been modified only with "bolt on" performance items, there is rarely a need for a larger fuel pump or larger injectors. Vehicle manufacturers typically design a "safety factor" into the fuel pump to accommodate the deterioration of the fuel system over time. This safety factor is intended to compensate for a fuel filter that is nearing the end its life, or for deposits in the injector orifice. Our research has revealed that generally there is about a 15%-20% oversize in most factory fuel pumps.
If the engine is enhanced via forced induction or nitrous oxide, the stock fuel pump is inadequate. If the engine’s power is increased more than 15-20% fuel delivery must increase as a factor of the power gain.
The way to determine the proper-size fuel pump is based on the desired brake specific fuel consumption (BSFC) of the engine. This term refers to how much fuel in pounds per hour (pph) the engine consumes per horsepower and is a measure of the efficiency of the engine. It is a useful term in determining the total fuel requirement of the engine.
On vehicles equipped with forced induction or nitrous oxide, higher BSFC’s are required as an added measure of safety to prevent detonation or high combustion chamber temperatures. Below is a guide of BSFC’s with standard CR that AEM uses for various engines that run on gasoline:
• Naturally Aspirated engines have a BSFC of .48 to .50
• Forced Induction engines have a BSFC of .65 to .68
Methanol (alcohol) powered engines require twice the amount of fuel so the BSFC’s are doubled. Calculating the total fuel requirement of an engine requires simple equations that we outline in the following section. You must know how much power the engine is anticipated to make and we recommend that you guess on the high end. The fuel requirement will be determined in pounds per hour of fuel flow. Since most pumps are rated in gallons/hour you must know the weight of your fuel/gallon. (The vast majority of gasoline based fuels run at 7.25 lbs./gallon.)
The equations to determine your fuel requirement is as follows:
• (Power x BSFC) x (1 + Safety Margin) = pounds/hour
• Pounds/hour / 7.25 = gallons/hour.
An example of this equation is:
• 500 hp gasoline engine using moderate boost with a 30% safety margin
• (500 x .625) x 1.30 = 406.25 lbs./hr.
• 406lbs/7.25 = 56 gallons/hour.
• If the pump that is being considered is rated in liters per hour, use the conversion factor of 3.785l/gallon. The pump described above would be rated at 56 gallons x 3.785 liters = 211.96 liters/hour.
In the fuel pump sizing, always use a safety margin greater than 20%.
 
At low PSI, the dual cobra pumps flow more than the single GT pump....but as PSI increases, the SVT pumps fall on their face in the flow department but the GT pump stayes pretty much flat on flow. I believe the GT pump passes the cobras @ 50PSI.

It flows quite abit more ultimatly and will support along the lines of 550RWHP with the use of 60# injectors BY ITSELF without any other modifications to the fuel system. The cobra tank/pump setup may be easier to perform, but cost wise is nowhere even close. We are talking about $750 vs $90 shipped for the GT pump and the GT pump definatly > cobra pumps.

Another option is to use dual GT pumps in the cobra basket....that setup W/O a BAP will support over 700RWHP from what I hear. Add a BAP to it and its in the 800+ RWHP range from what iv heard. I think people are even trying to hit 1000RWHP on that setup, and im sure it will be done.

so what do i have to do to get a gt pump in there, just baffle the tank?

You need to drill a few 1/2 or so size holes mid way in the stock basket, cut your hot/ground wires that connect to the stock pump and solder on seperate female ends. The stock pump has a plug type setup, but the GT pump has the + and - a mile away from eachother compared to stock...so the plug wont work.

Remove the plastic case from the GT pump, and remove the long black hose that comes with it to. Then it should fit right into your basket....but you will need to notch the hat that connects the outlet of the pump to your fuel line to clear the (negitive) terminal/post on the GT pump...you will also need to make a 1/4 inch or so spacer that goes between the hat and the top of the basket to preven the hat from setting all the way down like it does stock.
Reason being is that the GT pumps spout is not the same size all the way down like the stocker, as you can see in this photo I took

So basically if you push that fat end TOO far into the hat, it pushes past the metal seal in the hat and will not beild pressure....its important to NOT push the hat all the way down over the GT pump. Thus the spacer(s) :D
