I failed emission testing for noise

I don't even remember them doing a noise test last time.Does anyone have any suggestions to quiet it down.I have the stock saleen catback still on it. The standard is 93 and I was at 97/98.It's not that loud but it doesn't sound like a 4.6 either. I am thinking the lady was suspicious because she called someone else over to take a look and that is when they performed the test. Maybe I should just try a different station ???

If it's stock then I don't see how they could hold that against you, especially since the vehicle was sold that way. You could always try a different station. I am sure it won't be worth going through the hassle to prove to them that your catback is stock, especially when the headers and mid pipe aren't.

Seems with each passing year we get close closer and closer to CA influenced emissions regulations and setbacks because of it...

yea just go to another station, most of the people working at the stations dont care about noise, but theres allways those few that take there job seriously

Simple. DEQ regulations are essentially non-existent for motorcycles. Motorcycles and low-speed vehicles are not tested, as their numbers are low in terms of both harmful emissions and physical units on the road. It sucks! If Oregon and Washington had the budgets, they would both enforce California emissions immediately.

After trying another station, simply purchase some exhaust baffles from Summit or Jegs. I have used these in several cars and have seen effective db reduction. As I recall, there is a cone style available that you can slip in at the collector of each header. This way, you can take them out after testing. The last car that I installed one of these in was a focus, with cams, race header, etc. I would guess we dropped about 10db at the tailpipe. The car lived in Eugene, so unfortunately, it was never tested to generate any hard data. Good luck!

Well it's kinda a pain, but Ive seen the Jeffs use this: take off the tailpipe at the muffler, and put in some steel wool, with a piece of wire to keep it from getting blown down the tailpipe... then drive REAL EASY down to the emissions station and go thru the test. It will be quiet-er. Then go home and pull out the steel wool.

did you go to the one by liberty highschool righ toff 26 thats where i just got my 5.0 done and i have shorties and x pipe and flows i thought wow my cars kinda loud at 2500 i thought for sure they were going to say somthing about it.

I went through this with my 429 powered Bronco, it took me 8 tries at 3 different stations, with a restrictor plate in the system, before someone let me pass. The station off Columbia Blvd. has a Nazi supervisor, don't bother going there. Gresham is better, but I ended up finally passing at the Hillsboro station off 26. They were cool there. My Bronco tested at 101-106db without the plate. The 106 test was in the far right lane, the only lane they'd let me in at the station off Columbia. I argued with the guy that it only tested that loud because the pipe was pointing right at the wall, and the reverberation was artificially raising the noise level. Guy was an ass about it. I bought the pair of restrictor plates at Portland Muffler, out on Airport Way. IIRC, it was $35 for the pair, and they install between header and pipe. Basically all they are is a header flange with a bunch of washers welded on it to reduce flow. It dropped my tests down to 94-96db consistently. Problem with that is I was STILL too loud. But, as mentioned the Hillsboro crew didn't break out the db meter, and handed me my tags.

Now for the really bad news for you guys. Apparently you all haven't been following the news, so I hope you're sitting down: As of the 2009 model year BOTH OREGON AND WASHINGTON ARE ADOPTING CA EMISSIONS STANDARDS. Look it up, I am NOT pulling your leg. WA passed a resolution years ago saying that if OR ever adopted CA emissions, they would follow suit. In 2005, OR Governor Kulongowski started the process, and managed to BYPASS THE LEGISLATURE. It was made law earlier this year. No older vehicles will be affected, everything 2008 and older will be grandfathered in, but the 2009 model year cars (which can go on sale as early as January '08) have to meet 2009 CA emissions standards, WHICH ARE GOING TO BE MORE RESTRICTIVE THAN CURRENT REGS!!!

As a side note, no diesel powered passenger car sold in America currently meets '09 CA emissions. By '09, I'm sure some of them will, but if the law were to go into effect now, the only diesels that could be sold would be trucks, which have a different set of regulations.

As far as the California emissions is concerned, I will believe it when I see it. Yes, we are closer than we have ever been to it politically, but this concept has been in the hopper for about ten years. Every time they tell us that it will be implemented "in a few years" the initiative gets scrapped, due to budget shortcomings. Hopefully, this holds true again.
I am also curious to see how the diesel vehicles do in terms of emissions. I know that there has been talk of testing trucks as well and several of the big auto makers have been working on cleaning up the diesel truck emissions. Daimler-Chrysler, for example, has said that they will introduce an improved diesel hybrid Dodge Ram in the near future, that is supposed to get excellent mileage with greatly reduced emissions. We'll see. If they do, I may get one.

The Problem is the EPA has their head really far up their a$$. Sometimes I think they want to destroy the enviroment. They give all sorts of breaks to gas/electric or diesiel/electric hybreds which are horible for the enviroment, and ban clean diesels. The sooner they start listening to us automotive engineers the better off we will be.

They are old and stuck in their ways, if they want to fix the problems infront of us they need to pay attention and learn something from the people that know what is going on.

Good new guys .I found a friendly station like some of you suggested that passed me.The guy really liked my car and I think that hepled a little.They actually joked about failing it for noise and then said "step this way and we will get you taken care of".Now I just need to put some miles on and get it tuned for spring.
