I CANNOT WIN!

So yesterday i changed the fuel pump in my friends pebble driveway since no one else is at school. So im jiggling the tank out and the car tips over on the jackstands. And of course one of the wheels happens to be off the car. So the car is sitting on one wheel with the jack under the fuel tank holding up that side of the car, while also putting a dent in the tank, but THANKFULLY not puncturing it (thank good for the plank of wood i had between the jack and the tank). So i get the car back up, get the tank outta the car, take the old pump assembly out, install the new pump, and go to drop it in the tank. Well the dent is exactly where the fuel pump sits in the tank, so i had to pop the tank out which took 2 hrs tapping it with a jack handle and a hammer from the vent hole and the hole where the pump goes in. So i finally get everything back together, have my friend prime the tank while i check for leaks, then started it up and took it around the block a few times...no leaks. YES!! So today i decided maybe i should go fill the car up before i drive from Georgia to NJ tomorrow, that way if i have a problem i cant get it fixed before i leave. Well i go to get gas and i get to about 11.8 gallons, and it still isnt full. Im thinking to myself, its a 12.8 gallon tank, was i really that low? I mean i ran it down so i would have almost nothing in the tank to make it easy to drop the tank. Well i get to 12.3 and i stop cause i hear dripping. Well i look under the car and gas is dripping out from the seal where the filler tube meets the tank, then it started pouring out. So i had the car towed to the ford dealer to get the seal fixed because i am not dropping the tank again. I am sick of this **** happening to me, i deserve better treatment from my car than this hahaha. All i do is baby it, and it always gets revenge on me. Bastard:mad:

If it aint one thing its another.

When I did the fuel pump on my car, I had the same issue. That seal tore on the fuel filler pipe. Except for I never noticed it till one of my friends was watching me at an auto X. Every time I took a fast corner to the left fuel would shoot out from the car. :nonono:

In my Hayes manual it recommends replacing that seal if the fuel tank is removed from the car.

Hooooly shart. That couldv'e been alot worse, were you laying under the car when it slipped off the axle stands? That thought is always in the back of my mind when I'm wrestling something while laying under the car "hhmmm I could very easily die here....". I'm gonna swallow my words, since almost everything I do on my car goes almost too smoothly..... I know it will get back at me one day for all those times it treated me well.

The tank holds about 15.4 gallons.
The grommet is 20 bucks at the dealership and should be replaced anytime you drop the tank. FWIW, you dont really have to drop the tank to do the seal (future reference).

And please never ever hammer anything inside a gas tank. I dont worry about liquid fuel nearly as much as vapor. A spark inside the tank could have really screwed your day up. This is one reason welders are so super anal about welding (empty) tanks up.

That said, nice work getting the pump installed and I hope the rest of it goes smooth. :nice: It's always sad when the most expensive part of the repair is the gas lost when the grommet leaked. :D

Good luck bud.

Thanks guys, yea i know i was working in a bad area, so i was being extra careful, but i guess you can never be too careful. Yea my friend Dave who is like a mustang guru felt so bad today when i told him because he told me that you basically need to change the seal every time you have the tank out cause it always rips...thanks dave. Well the car is at Ford now getting the seal replaced because i didnt have any more patience to fix this and my dad said just take it to Ford. Im praying to god that my car has no more problems and i make it home in once piece.

damn, that's scary!! my fiance & mom are always worried that something like this is going to happen to me while working on the car on jackstands/jack. you lucky dog!!

everytime i've helped dump a tank, we use my brother-in-law's pit--comes in real handy!

side note:
what seal are we talking about here, exactly? the one that always rips when removing the gas tank
