i got my car back buuut......

So i finally got my car back after nasty blown head gasket, and now it makes a peculiar clicking noise when im accelerating :nonono: its present at idle but not really noticeable until im in the 1200-2500 range. this sucks so much a** cuz i get it fixed for something else, and it gets returned with another problem. it had never done it before, and its noticeable from outside too :( i think it might be exhaust related as the mechanic didnt change the exhaust manifold gaskets while he was there, ive read about alot of guys hearing clicking noises when they have exhuast leaks. The exhuast is also noticeably quieter than before now, it almost sounds muffled. i dunno if the water that escaped from my exhuast mightve jacked up my cats or something. when my head gasket blew i got the nice billowing cloud of white smoke and the whole nine yards. anyways, is there a way to test if i have an exhaust leak from the manifolds? thx for any help y'all :hail2:

An exhaust leak will show up when the engine is warm. It will be consistent accelerating too. You can put some sea foam through your car to find the leak. Wherever you see white smoke, is where the leak is. Most likely it's leaking between where the midpipe meets the exhaust manifold.

If the sound is louder when the engine is cold, I would suspect a bad/sticking lifter in the valvetrain. This is because when the engine oil gets thicker, the lifter stops "sticking", and the noise becomes more quiet. If you do have a sticking lifter, it's best to leave it alone. It won't hurt anything. Repair on something like that would be costly.

And of course, there are the injectors. Those little buggers click and tick too. If the noise you hear is pretty faint and quiet, you are hearing the injectors. An exhaust leak or sticking lifter would be much, much more noticeable. I hope this helps!

thx for the reply man, yea it sounds like it could be a bad/sticking lifter, although the leak where the manifold and midpipe meet sounds like it could be it, since the sound seems like its coming from under the car, rather than from the top end. i gotta look up seafoam and see if its viable, sounds promising :D im thinking about getting under the car and checking or leaks while its running  thx for the help :nice:

Try the seafoam. The white smoke while poor out of the exhaust leak, if one is present. You could also spray some soapy water on the exhaust, and it will bubble if you have a leak.

Now this might be stupid, but my buddies 99GT had the same problem and similar noise that your talking about.. we couldnt find anything!! But.. when he checked the oil.. it was like a quart 1/2 low.. the lack of oil was the problem.. Also they "Said" they did an oil change and I am will to bet to this day that they didnt use Full Synthic like he asked..

So we changed it again, and ran some sea foam.. Problem Fixed!!!:nice:

Other than that, check for exhaust leaks like the98stang says... Or check to see if something is lose.. maybe they missed over something, and there is something metal hitting something..

Hope this helps ya find it and let us know!!!!!!
