Hello everyone. I'm about to do a PI Head swap and I have a set of p&p PI heads I'm looking for the right cam for my setup. I have every bolt-on you can think of and I'm looking to make around 300rwhp do I really need a stage 2 cam to do this? Also I really want to keep this on the cheap side as well.

No, N/a For now and If I do goto turbo or blower engine rebuild. Emission are no problem in my part. Plus PI swap will bump me to 10.5:1 so need to run 93 in it. I need cams that works better for this swap.

you need valvesprings no matter what you do, go with the crower stage 2 P.I. cams... they aren't as wild as the VT stage 2 but make more power than the VT Stage1's...

they also retain the low end that you lose with the Stage 2's.... and you SHOULD be in the 290+hp range with them...

I'm asking b/c on VT site they say on stage 1 cams you can use the stock pi springs. Also I did a lot of searching on this forum, I found a few post about people going to stage 2 cams and only making about 5 more top end hp. 5 more hp for 200+ more bucks no way. Also I just want to know which is best for the pi swap with ported heads.

VT stage 1 if you're planning FI soon, imo. fwiw i made 280rwhp 310rwtq in 90+ heat & lots of humidity when i was n/a. when i put the s/c on i was making 440rwhp+ on 8lbs. stock valve springs as well, but i don't rev it over 6200

you can get by using stock springs with VT stage 1, or comp 262s.

I just did the swap. What duration do the VT's have. And are the heads ported or not? And no, you have to change the springs. All Pi cams require .550 lift. I have the comp cam 262's and i put down 305rwhp and 327 tq with a stock ass airbox. In 95 degree temp and 55% humidity

the NPI's are set for .500 and i'm almost positive the PI ones are .550. I have the 262's and i love them, it was the biggest cam i could go to without the PVC being very scatchy. Due to a plenum leak my idle won't go below 1k right now but i can still hear it chopping a little. Its a good cam that provides great low end power, about 3,500 up through the 5,500 range. I held over 300rwhp from 3,500rpm all the way up too about 5,900, then it dropped like 5 or 6 hp. and i think thats due to the stock intake.

I am also wondering what Cams i should get with my PI set up. Not to piggy back your thread but i will also be stayin N/A with all the bolt ons. But my heads are not ported :bang: wish i would have just thought ahead.. lol

But it sounds like the comp 262's are the way to go?

So I have stock 2003 mustang gt PI heads that are now ported and polished. I can install a stage 1 cam with no problems. Also the compcam 262 will get me to the 300rwhp mark I'm looking for. Thats what I needed to know.

what bolt on's did you have to get that?

Well its sad, but i have NOT got the damn thing on the Dyno yet.. :bang: :notnice: its been almost a year now, no progblems what so ever. Only thing that really bugs me is I have some really Shi** headers (flowtech LT's) and they leak. Not really bad but enough to make me :bang:

But i should get it on within the next two weeks and I will post about it. So just be looking out for it. lol

But my buddy just went the other day to the dyno and put down 281hp 283tq and I have WAY more bottom end and my car feels alot faster. So anywhere near 280-290 and I would say thats about right.. just as a guess...

I would say a stage 1 cam would be plenty for the stock pi heads, especialy for the rpm range you will be operating in. But for a mild ported and polished pi head, I would go with stage 2 cams and new springs. Will get you to that 300rwhp mark n/a for sure, plus wont leave you regretting anything later when you go forced induction.
:nice:
