Needed modifications for E85?

I've seen what Alcohol will do to a carb car.I won't put any in my vehicles.

All alcohols are not created equal! Methanol is what eats rubber lines and carb parts. This guy has been running ETHANOL (The "E" in E85.) with his Holley carb for several years...no problems. I guess our "modern" fuel systems are designed with alcohol as fuel, in mind.

I got his email response today. He runs almost 11/1 compression (Says that's about as much as you can run on the street with iron heads.) and has the timing set at about 18 degrees BTDC.


For those that say it can't be done (making similar power and similar or better economy), sorry, until you have a car that has been running it for several years (or your are a fuel system engineer) that opinion is just that, an opinion. It's not my car though. I'm not here to start an arguement.

I'm not arguing that good or better power can't be made. He's running a high compression engine and can fully benefit from the extra octane the e85 offers. There is no opinion however on fuel economy being worse, just facts. E85 has around 30 % less energy within it…which means your going to need more fuel to create the same power. The real gains obviously are in the increased timing you can run which on high compression apps is very beneficial.

The only way I can think of to get the fuel economy on par with that of standard gasoline would be to increase the compression in an attempt to increase the engines efficiency. This will put the compression ratio far higher however…far beyond the 11:1 that your friend is running.

Again, one of you is DOING it the other is TALKING about it. For both to be "right", one would have to have bad info or be lying. I don't know either of you. I'll take both sides of the info under advisement.

Been running E85 in my blow stang for 2 years. Bigger injectors, tune and fuel pump. You you have mostly stock car with 19 lb injectors put 24's in and bump the timing 4 degrees or get tweecer and make a tune for E85 and Gas
