I have a before and after poster framed in my office that is open to the public in my salvage yard. It has 9 photos total, two of them I am standing in. So people know it is my car.

I hate when people go, "Nice Mustang, what's done to it.?" (In my sig you see I have minor mods.) So I tell them "Just a 5.0L swap, 5 lug conversion and I painted it black." They ALWAYS try to out do me with "I've got a 427 Windsor, double pumpers, 10 point cage, 33X15 wheels and a BLAH BLAH BLAH."

Why does everybody think they are better and try to out do you????? Does anybody else get this?? They then ask me what it runs, I tell them I don't know, it's stock, probably 14's. "Oh, mine ran 9.56 at Milan, 9.43 at whereever.....I am like **** YOU! I just want a nice car to drive not some drag rat. These people never give up and keep going about their car, that is like apples to oranges to mine. I can never get a plain compliment, without an outdoing!!

I think it stems from childhood. When i was a kid, if you mentioned any performance car you could bet your life that another kid next to you had an uncle or cousin or neighbor or somebody who had something faster. It didn't matter if your dad was John Force, they had something faster and cooler. It's the one-up thing.

I would have to agree. I never try to one up anything about my car. It is just their because it helps me sell Mustang parts sometimes. I am very humble when I talk about it because I know it's nice.

haha yeah. i hate that crap. whenever people ask what i have done to my car, i just tell them its stock. much easier that way. everyone also has the impression that 5.0's are supposed to be "the baddest car EVAR", so if it's not in the 10's its a disappointment. It's funny too, because the person doing the yipping is almost never the owner of a nice car. the actual owner is probably just like you, and keep it low profile.

 I know that guy. I think he is a liar. His name is Fred. :nonono:

You know what...that is :bs: That is your friends, Uncle's, friend. Not your cousins, friends, Uncle. :rlaugh:

It's even worse when they know NOTHING about track times yet ask what it runs.

I say mid 12s on a slick, had a guy go, oh really, my dads stock Charger went 7s. Yup, pulled the front tires all the way down the track. Guy was driving a Blue Neon missing most of the paint, with those cool purple neon badges, and had about half his teeth left!

I think what it REALLY boils down to is how much of the car people build THEMSELVES.

Id have more respect for a guy turning a stock 5.0 into a 13.5 second car with a set of heads etc vs. someone who bought a turnkey car off the Bay of e with little to no knowledge of what kind of man hours it took or what is actually inside the motor etc...and runs 12s.

My .02......good thread!!!

I've always hated that. Be it on the street, or parked some where. I always say it's stock. I just don't feel comfortable with telling them the amount of $$$ I have in my mustang to a stanger. It's like "Oh nice house, whatca got in it"?

Usually, ricers usually use the "what's it got in it" question as a pretext to starting their own monologue of BS about their NAWSSSSS, their Type-R whatevers, their J-spec this and that, their imported-overnight-from-Japan doohickies, and their "custom" everything. I'm sure that you could tell them that you've got a motor custom-made by Black & Decker and they wouldn't hear a word of it because they're too busy thinking of whatever kind of BS lies or overblown pseudo-glorious "mods" they're going to tell you they've done to their own car (or their friend's father's brother's nephew's cousin's uncle's sister's mother's former roommate's car).

It is my firm belief that these kinds of people need to be bludgeoned immediately to death on the spot, dismembered, cooked upon a spit over a raging campfire, and eaten.
