do they handle ok in the corners?

I don't know what size tire you need, but make sure you have sub-frame connectors and you weld the torque boxes/get torque box reinforcements if you plan to run sticky tires and launch the car hard.
If by 255's you mean bfgs, because i think that's the only 16 inch tire from them.
I wouldn't use them if you are driving around on them on the street.
They are very wide, and run a good chance of rubbing.
And they look like crap because of the tall side wall.
For trips to the track, yes. Street, no.
BFG's are great, just not in a 16.
Use nitto 245 50's.
Little bit less traction than the bfgs, but they will handle way better, and still look decent.
225 50 16's were the best, (if the fronts were also a 225 50 16), but nitto doesn't make them anymore.
I had a set of Nitto's 245 50's, they pick everything up in the street. Your ground effects kit will take a beating...
I would use the 245/45/16 instead of 245/50/16 (sidewall is too tall and looks goofy)
Well, the Nittos come in 245/50/16 and i have 225/50/16's on the front. new kuhmo's.
Would this be OK?

If you value your paint don't run drag radials on the street. I have plenty of paint bills from slicks and drag radials. The roads in Atlanta are loaded with rocks and debris. If you want a sticky tire run a nitto. Don't let the air pressure out of stock radials. It won't nelp it hook better because the sidewall won't give and you will loose either the tire or loose control of the car. The factory suspension isn't designed for straight line acceleration. It doesn't weight transfer very well so slicks are the only real option. Then if you don't have the alot of money in the rear end and rear suspension you'll break alot of parts. The Nitto's will give you better traction but, your factory suspension is the cause of most of the traction isssue.
