So today I got out of work early, and came home to do my 3G alternator upgrade. Everything went fine until i took out the lower bolt that held in the alternator. There must have been a defect in my stock bracket because the lower arm that holds the alternator in with the compression bushing snapped off. I called a Ford dealer for an OEM replacement and they quoted me $376 for the BRACKET because it is discontinued and no longer produced.

I called over 30 junkyards on Long Island and no one has one or has had one for a long time. Can anyone tell me if there's an aftermarket bracket that would work? I have underdrive pulleys and a slightly shorter belt, but I still have my smog pump. Does anyone have one laying around? (MODS: please don't delete the thread, this is not a WTB ad, i am just in a bind right now) Thanks in advance. Here's a pic, it will probably make you just as pissed off as I am right now

JB Weld :D I've used it for a repair in the past. You should be able to get buy until you can find another bracket if you just bolt it in place with the broken piece. You still have 2 attachment points to secure the alternator, the top bolt and the rear part of the bracket. It should be strong enough to hold the alternator in place.

PMs sent :nice:

JB weld to hold something that's spinning at a few thousand RPM sounds like too much of a gamble for me, even if it's temporary, but thanks a lot for the suggestion dude, anything would help at this point :D

i considered it

what all is involved with getting rid of the smog pump? will it affect the driveability of the car at all?
Remove pump, put in shorter belt. Job done.
And no it wont change the way the car drives at all. You will free up a couple horses from the parasitic loss too. :nice:

And dont be so mellow dramatic :nonono:

maybe you should call the waaahmbulance? and it's spelled melodramatic
:rlaugh:

I almost forgot, I think there is some jumper you have to put in the smog pump to keep from getting a cel when you remove the whole system. I may be wrong as its been several years since I removed one
The pump only injects air into the exhaust so that the powers that be get a better oxygen reading. Really it was just a cheat. Since you have no cats anyway then the smog pump is just dead wieght

Get the March bracket if you can swing it, but remember you'll have to buy a new belt as well. That little bracket is far from a reason to say your life sucks, if you had my luck you would of probably already killed yourself.lol

Good luck with the install.

If you're not able to find a new bracket, try calling around to some machine shops. Most of them can weld cast aluminum, and to just reattach that tab shouldn't cost much. I'd bet you could get out the door for under $40. I had a shop that was going to pull a broken off intake bolt out of some GT40P heads I was going to sell for $12. Good luck!

Yes. JB Weld will hold up in a pinch. It will hold like a like a serious MoFo. I can't even count the number of things I've fixed with it that are still holding strong. That stuff is freakin amazing. If it can fix a cracked cylinder head and then hit the track for some torture, it can handle your alt bracket. It's good that people have extras lying around though so hopefully you can just get one of theirs.

I've NEVER EVER EVER had good luck with JB weld. You must be lucky!
