I dont usually put up threads. I just had to share what I discovered. I own a 2007 ford explorer V6. I changed the fuel filter and the air filter. I put in full synthetic oil. I fueled up last week and I'm now at a half tank gas. I drive allot of miles to work and home. So I was wondering what my gas mileage was. So on the free way I watched my fuel mileage guage. It says that I'm averaging 23 to 24 mpg. I love this explorer :D

I'm not 100% sure, but I don't think those in car gauges are highly accurate. Your best bet would be to fill up, drive and then count your miles right before you fill up again then miles/gallons ;)

Only if you go to the same pump as the first time. That's what a lot of people miss. The differences between brand pump nozzles do play a role in how much gas your tank actually takes before it shuts off. They are not consistent between nozzles. Ever go to a pump that clicks off even when it's emply? :shrug:

Even then, you need to drive the same routes with the same loads and weather conditions to see your true economy over a few tanks of gas. If you drive up some hills, or have passengers, or a tailwind on the highway, it changes a lot .

I've accounted for some of the variables and found i can get a +/- 3-4 MPG swing of my overall economy with them. With that said, i don't beleive it's an accurate way of telling either. I laugh when people tel me they gained 2MPG by running premium. That number could easily come simply by having a good tailwind on the highway one day.

yeah i dont trust those in-car gauges either. my brothers 97 lincoln mk viii has one and its always a little off. Its more of a ballpark. But i'd rather just have a vacuum gauge. *sigh*....new cars.....

3-4 mpg swing??? srsly??

I usually fill up.. same gas station all the time, different pumps, and i make sure i fill it past when the pump click off. I didn't think it would swing that much.. i usually MAX sway .5-1 mpg different.

A lot of idling affects fuel economy, especially in a Mustang it seems. I swear my car uses more fuel idling than driving. I kept that thought to myself, then one day out of the blue my buddy with a stockish 4.6 Mustang said the same thing. It must be the Mustangs 'performance tune' or somethng. :shrug:

I never thought about the same pump theory, but I try to go to the same station and I usually go to the same pump because of the fuel door being on the pass side.

We traded our Yukon XL for a 2007 EB Explorer 4WD V6 a few months ago. Around town, with my wife driving (no highway) the mileage gauge only reads like 12 or so. It reads like 17.5 when I drive it to work, 36 miles round trip. We took a short out of town trip a few weeks ago, and on the highway only, it read 24.5 on the way there, and 26.3 on the way back. I was babying it to see how good I could get, staying below 60. :D However you look at it, we are still getting better mileage than with our Yukon.

On a complete tank of gas, I've found the actual fuel used has been about a gallon more than the computer reads, so I'm sure the mileage is less. We will be taking a 6 hour trip Thanksgiving, so I'll get a more accurate highway number then. Although we will be fully loaded, so that will weigh us down.

I didn't realize the newer explorers were getting 20+ mpg on the highway.. My Jeep Cherokee is getting like 18 mpg with 80% highway, 20% city. I'm thinking the newer explorers (2002+) would get better mileage? :shrug:

I wasn't referring to all the nozzles only. I meant more of all variables possible. I think i added a +/- for wind, hills, weight, etc and got a range of MPG values depending on what i put in.

I fill my car (1991 Taurus SHO) everytime and check my MPG everytime I fill up, sometimes I'll get 17.5 and sometimes I'll get 19.5 or anywhere in between. My driving styles change alot tho, some weeks I'll hammer on it alot but some I'll just put around.

My buddy has the same truck - 2006 Hemi ram night runner quad cab. He drives like 95% highway and barely gets 18mpg. Always under 65 and it has the cylinder shut off technology.

his truck has something wrong with it. they are advertised at 19 from the factory. I noticed a huge difference when I got rid of the air silencer with a CAI and got rid of the factory exhaust. not a lot of diff hp wise but the truck breathes much easier at hwy speeds.

He bought the truck BRAND new.. it had 2 miles on it and it has always gotten that kind of mileage.. He put on full SLP exhaust at about 20k miles and picked up like 1-2 mpg.

Actually SLP is local here in TR. They used his fox mustang to fab up the fox loud mouth prototype, from that they made the production kits and he got one for free since they borrowed his car to design it..

Wouldn't you know they did the SAME thing with his Ram! They used HIS 06 ram to fab up the prototype exhaust for Rams and he got his for free. The system doesn't use loud mouth mufflers though so its not terribly loud. It got a real nice sound to it! :nice:
