whats the best and cheapest way to put discs on my rear axle

I think thats a front rotor isn't it ?

doesn't look like a front rotor to me, it may just be a generic pic too though. don't go by what the reviewers said either, one has a tundra and the other has a cobalt. i can say that it does look thin enough to be a ventilated CV rotor, though.


we might also check some of the marauder/crown vic (also panther platform) forums and see what those guys are using, if anyone knows it would be them. :nice:
 
Unless you were already narrowing the housing, right? Or would it be extra work above and beyond to rotate the housing ends?

If you were already building the rear end housing, then certainly it wouldn't be any more work to flip the end flanges 90-degrees and weld them in place.

--However, I do not know if Ford kept the same flange bolt hole center distances from bolt hole-to-bolt hole on the '03-up models as that of those on the '02 and earlier versions (??). If not, then this presents another problem. I just know that the pattern switched from horizontal to vertical on the factory ventilated C-V discs.

If it didn't change, then should not be a problem. If it did change, then the existing flange holes would probably need to be welded up solid and new holes drilled --and this is assuming that the hole pattern of the '03-up C-V's brakes will fall within the borders of the 8/9-inch small bearing housing's end flanges.
 
found 'em, DBA rotors (Disc Brakes Australia) makes them and they are difnitely vented, in fact they make 2 versions; the 4000 series and the 4000XS series. i found them here

these are also probably the same rotors that RRS uses on their rear disc brake kit, i would bet.

Unless I'm just overlooking it, I don't see anything that definitively states or shows the rotors as being for the rear.

The one in the photo appears to be for the front since the sides of the hat taper inward toward the wheel mounting surface. A rear disc with an internal set of drum shoes for the parking brake would have a hat with parallel sides.

4000 series: left 42149SL, right 42149SR $119.95 each

4000XS series: left and right, 42149XS $130.95 each


Rusty, no they aren't exactly cheap, but they are vented rotors for the 98-02 Crown Vic, plus a complete Crown Vic setup from the junk yard, around $100 or so and the kit with the spacers for around $40, so for under $400 you get a rear disc setup with drilled and/or slotted VENTED rotors and a drum parking brake, doesn't sound too bad to me, hell even you had to replace the calipers it would still be under $500

so yeah, the rotors are a bit on the high side but overall you'd have a pretty darn inexpensive really nice rear disc setup. also, you wouldn't necessarily have to buy the rotors at the same time as the rest of system, really you could even try it out with just the solid rotors and upgrade to the vented ones later if you so choose.

BTW, i'm still not done looking yet either, i could swear i've seen some cheaper on ebay before but haven't been able to find them lately, it may be that they only put them on every so often or something
 
I understand the reasoning behind running ventilated rotors, [they run cooler], but I think it's a bit blown out of proportion that only a ventilated rotor can be used in a situation where the brakes are applied hard and often and still be able to function correctly --such as in opentrack racing.

If the brakes are being installed on a street car that will never see track use, then the solid rotor is more than capable of handling that situation.

In reference to opentrack racing...There's a guy who lives in Alabama that also posts here [LMan]. LMan had purchased a set of SN95 V6/GT rear disc conversion brackets from me and installed them on his track-only '68 Mustang. His track car debut was this past August at Road Atlanta with the solid rotor SN95 rear discs on his race car. It endured the rigors of opentrack racing with no problems. Added cooling was suppled to the rotors by scoops he had installed to direct air across them.

I have a stock 67 mustang 9" housing and I plan on running aftermarket 31 spline axles. I have slotted and cross drilled rotors on the front so i'd like to have the same on the rear...but dang those rotors are expensive!! So if I wanted to mount the crown vic rear brakes what are the best years to get? Are they bolt on or do they require any fabwork or welding?

you can get cross-drilled and slotted C-V rotors that aren't vented like the ones we were talking about for quite a bit cheaper. napa has them for a little over $100 each
 
Honestly, I just want a standard vented rotor. I don't really care for slotted/dimpled/cross drilled rotors. If I want them cooler then the venting provides I'll put cooling ducts on them.
