Hey everbody new to the site. Got a ? I have a 95 GT that will crank but wont start everytime. It has a new fuel filter fuel pump is a few yrs old. It has a KN air filter and H-pipe other than that it is stock. Any help is greatly app

Thanks for the site it was helpful but, sometimes it will start up and run fine just like theres nothing wrong. Some days it wants to be a pain and not start at all I can let it set a day or so try to start it and it will fire right up no prob what so ever and will run fine for a few days then it starts all over again

Sounds like you could have issues with the stator inside the distributor housing. When its not starting, Id be checking for spark. You could also pull a plug and see if it has any evidence of fuel on the tips. The stator has a hand in fuel and spark and can give you similar problems when its on its way out.

The parts houses call that part in the dizzy the " Ignition Pickup". I just priced one for my car tonight at Advanced and it was 22.00. A new coil is 18.00. so for about 40 bucks I'm good to go for awhile. I'd start with those two parts and go from there. If you have a bench vise and some patients you can swap the stator/pickup in the dizzy yourself.

And otherwise, you simply have to wait for it to act up to do your testing. It's a PITA but that's just how it is.

A timing light makes it easy to test spark. A noid light makes it easy to check injector pulsing. A fuel pressure gauge makes checking pressure easy.

Good luck.

Thanks for the link, i'll be doing mine tomarrow. I did one a few years back and didn't have instructions but I still got it done.

Dennis, does your car ever just stall out when you're idling and not start back up?

no whenever it starts it runs fine no problems what so ever. It mainly does when its low on fuel 1/4 tank or less I gonna try the distributor and stator rebuild but was also thinking it may be trash in fuel tank. Is there a drain plug for the fuel tank or do i need to drop the whole thing? Thanks for the help and the link

No drain, have to drop the tank I'm afraid. That's wierd how it only does it when you're low. Almost sounds like a fuel pump problem to me.

When your car won't start you really need to test for spark and power to the coil before getting into the PIP sensor swap. I mean, it probably could use a new one anyway.

If the gas is that old, it is JUNK. It turns to laquer in there!

No way is it going to run on that crap. Unfotunately our cars have no drain plug, so you will have to siphon the gas out.

Get fresh fuel, some stabil/drygas water remover, and let it cycle through. Chances are your injectors and everything else has some sort of caramelization. Be glad it's not carb'd lol

yeah it zapped me good so i know im gettn fire. what do you mean by a no fuel condition? next time it dont start i will check fuel pressure to see if im getting enough pressure and i think that will tell me alot

woke up this morning gonna drive to a buddys house to work on it had a half tank of gas and it wouldnt start.:( checked fuel pressure getting plenty of fuel. Turned key off and on 3 to 4 times each time letting the fuel pump prime and try to start it wasnt happening repeated the process 6 to 8 times finally started up ran fine no miss, skip, sputter or anything ran like a champ. Get to my buddys house turn it off a few minutes later wasnt happening tried off and on all day trying to figured it out. replaced coil distributor cap and button still nothing so now i am thinking its the pip sensor. does anybody have any ideas or advice? I need a pic of the pip sensor? I think its the silver box under the air intake am i right or wrong? or what is it called?

The PIP sensor or stator (same part different name) is actually located in the bowl of the distributor. The part in the location youre talking about is the TFI module. Both could give you similar sypmtoms like youre describing, though the TFI isnt as prone to failure since it was relocated away from the distributor.

The PIP sensor activates the fuel pump as the distributor is spinning. At least, thats how it works in laymans terms. If the sensor doesnt pick up the signal, the fuel pump doesnt stay on after it initally primes.
