Timing Pointer for 67 289

For the 67 289 was the 289 timing pointer built into the timing cover or was it a bolt on accessory? I ask because my timing cover doesnt have one. When I was looking I found some from mustangs unlimited for 68/69 289/302/351W but nothing specifically for 67. Does it matter? I assume I could use this but I want to make sure.

The car is a 67 but the engine in it was not original so it could be a later model cover.

Can you tell if this is the "bolt on" style timing pointer cover? I'm not sure.

That's the bolt on cover. The pointer bolted onto that small holed boss on the 2 o'clock position just above the cover bolt hole and the other end attaches with the lower left hand cover bolt. There's a casting number somewhere on the cover, that'll tell you if it's the correct cover for a 67. It will have had a C5, C6 or a C7 prefix. But Ford also used this same basic cover with newer prefixes up into the late 70's. It used a different bolt on pointer that was attached with the lower right hand bolt holes straddling the dipstick tube.

If thats right, how/what threads into the small hole?

:D Sorry, the other hole is the lower driver's side bolt hole. The small screw in the pic on the Mustangs Unlimited pointer goes into the boss with the small hole you pointed to. I have a habit of referring to stuff on an engine as relates to looking at them from the driver's seat. (that's the left side of the car in my mind) Move the arrow on the left side of the pic to the opposite lowerr bolt hole and you've got both pointed out correctly for that pointer.

The engine going into the car is a 5.0L roller motor out of a 1991 Mustang. I'm running a carb setup and a mechanical fuel pump. So I decided to swap the timing cover from the motor that was in there previously (289) as pictured above.

I'm also using my original V-belt pulleys, including the crank from the 289 with this balancer:

That said, do I need the timing pointer for a 5.0L engine or will TDC be true at the point indicated with the 289 timing pointer? I understand they are on the passengers side instead of the driver's side like they were on early model cars.

OK, went and looked at the link you posted. It looks like you can go forward with the 50 oz/in balancer and use the 289 pointer as this balancer is marked with timing marks in three locations.

Ok I just need to clarify one thing for my sanity. The 289 and 302 have different strokes, but will that affect the degree at which the #1 piston is at TDC? In other words if you swap a 289 cover and timing pointer onto a late model 302 block, the pointer will still point at 0 when the motor is at true TDC?

Stroke doesn't affect the pointer position. TDC (top dead center) is TDC.

The 347 is running t.d.c. no.1 @ 11 oclock.
I have a FMS pointer that screwed into the 2 larger holes on the left of the crank, they sell a 10oclock or 11oclock position pointer for roller motors.
You will need to assemble the engine/valvetrain to determine where yours will end up.
you can run the cheap pointer and timing tape on the balancer as an option.

The reason yours ended up at 11 o'clock was due to the balancer being used. All cranks are indexed with the keyway on the front snout indexed to TDC of the #1 cylinder. If you had used a 289 balancer, it would have had the timing marks indexed to a 289 timing cover pointer.
