External Mustang sound recording while driving

I know there are a lot of sound/video clips posted on the web from behind a parked Mustang comparing before and after exhaust swaps. I also know there are a few drive by/fly by clips. A handful of the Mustang from inside while driving exist too. What I haven't come across is a recording of a Mustang driving with a mic placed on the outside of the car. I would think it would be possible to place a small mic clipped to the rear license plate or something with a recorder in the trunk. Anyone know of the existence of any recording like this? I would imagine that would be a preferred source of sound comparisons rather than parked in a garage/driveway. I am toying with the idea of finding a cheap recorder/mic to try this. So I was wondering if if had already been done and if so what the results were like.

Well I just did an experiment. It wasn't the most successful. I used my iPod Nano to record the sound with an external mic hanging out of the trunk. The sound of the exhausts was WAAAY too much for the mic to handle it was really clipped. I will have to try an alternate method. Still it was fun to try.

I am pretty convinced it was the exhaust. There is a constant low rumble that I think is the wind. Then every time I put my foot down it just distorts. I also have some sound of the microphone banging around as it was just hanging by the mic wire. This is a distinct clicking that is easily identified. It was hanging on the top of the bumper about 6" outside of the trunk. I couldn't have it any closer to the trunk as the mic has a clip and an adapter that stopped the trunk closing if it was shorter.

Just drive with the trunk open a little :rlaugh: I saw a clip a while ago(like 13ish months) that had the mike out the passenger window(obviously shielded from the wind) it picked up the sound pretty well, but I think it was from the offroad X that he had... Thought it might be something you could try. I would but with the wind blowing like 40mph right now I don't think I would pick up anything :p

I guess I could try that. I was just about to drill a hole in my trunk to mount the mic. :rlaugh: Good job I saw this first!

 Glad I saved you some trouble...the trunks are tough and take a titanium bit :D kidding... I will try and find that clip again and post it. It might give you an idea maybe?

Yeah all four of us were in the conference center van trying to figure out if the diff was whining or if the wheel bearings were going out and so we had the newbie climb behind the back seat and his head popped back up after a while and that's what he said. We were all laughing so hard we had to pull over to the side of the road :rlaugh:

:D Yeah not saying you should get that setup(although I would like it :nice:) but it's a start for the camera anyways...maybe you could start a business for camera mounts. If it can withstand a a Mustang GT acceleration then it's a good mount

I've been planning on doing this. Still will this summer hopefully. What I'm going to do is mount the camera to the side of the car with a suction cup rig, then mount the mic to the trunk/bumper again with some sort of suction cup rig, making sure to put a windscreen on the mic.

Aw c'mon Darkfire...the snow can't be that bad :p I would probably try and get a sheet glass suction cup or something of that nature to have the strength. I know it won't be a big camera, but still better to be safe than sorry
Basically.. I'm using these suction cups they sell at Harbor Freight. Basically, something along these lines. Homemade Car Rig V1.02 - a set on Flickr

And I am NOT taking my car out in snow or salt. A month of salt and the finish on the wheels on my '05 was destroyed. Snow is basically gone. We've had some rain, but still need some more rain before I'll pull mine out yet.
