I have an '86 GT that I have owned for 19 years. I am in the process o a partial restoration. I am coming to the part of the driveline. Here is the question/comment; I would run a 6-speed if any manufacturer would have a 1:1 5th gear. EVERYONE who spends the $$ on the 6-speed is wasting their money. You have a 4-speed with 2 overdrives. This is a complete waste. Have a 1:1 5th and a .50 6th. This will give better gear spacing and MAKES TOTAL SENSE TO ME...

I disagree. I would get 29 and 23.6 mpg in my 94 firebird, under moderate driving conditions. When I would skip gears, 1-3-6 from a stop, or 2-4-6 from a roll, I would get even better!

Two over drives are very helpful if your car is doing double duty. Not to mention I have SEEN 700hp lt1/lsx put run after run, day after day, year after year through a t56. Not to mention 150k through my lt1. When my t5 goes, there will be nothing else in there!

Not really. Have you ever driven a 6-spd? They toss the extra gear in between 4th and 5th on a typical 5-spd. It's great on the highway when you want to use OD, but still have a little pep. Also it helps with 3.73's or higher. Give you another usable gear over 1:1. Too many people think a 6-spd is a 5-spd with another gear beyond 5th...but this is not true.

having a 6-spd with 1 OD is for torqueless wonders. I'd take 2 OD's over a 1:1 5th anyday.

But 1st and 2nd are not ideal for a sub-300HP car like a 5.0 in stock form. The ratio's are taller making your car slower.

in the ls1 i had 6th was for gas mileage. it would still accellerate in 5th. it actually reached top speed in 5th.

i liked it. with 4.10s it accellerated hard with the2.66 first gear t56. it would run hard on the highway in 5th, and in 6th it would be sitting under 1900rpm at 70mph.

you do realize that in a 1/4 mile you dont need to use more than 4 gears if the car is gear correctly, right? they make adjustable slipper clutches for a reason.

Just as I said have a 1:1 5th and .50 6th...... WELL FORD HAS DONE THIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I was right as usual...

for the Getrag MT82 in the 2011 gt 6th is .65.

1st 3.66
2nd 2.43
3rd 1.69
4th 1.32
5th 1.00
6th 0.65

it just means you run less gear in back. hell, the T5z went from a 1:1 4th to a .63 5th. this is less spread than that, so its nothing to write home about. the problem with this is the numerically higher the gear ratios in the trans means the lower the tq capacity is. a 2.66 first gear t56 is stronger than the getrag mt82, and for a high power applications that is important. besides, who cares what the fifth gear ratio is anyway? ever tried rowing from 4th to 5th in a race? it sucks. too much time spent doing gear changes can = slower ET.

so do you have a link to your claim? i doubt they would ever jump from a 1:1 5th to a .5 6th. thats a huge spread. anyone who has actually driven one will tell you the same thing. but keep up the good work. maybe you should be a ford engineer. in the interview tell them how you are always correct. even though in this case it appears you are sorely misinformed. until then, take solice in the fact that you know so much about what everyones combo needs, even though you obviously have never driven any high powered stick cars down a track.:nice:
