Quick Mark 8 fan Question

Ok, I got my Mark 8 fan fabbed up and installed and have a DCC 2SP controller to wire up.

Fan Control

Since the Mark 8 is a variable speed fan and either black wire runs the fan at the same Hi speed......should I just wire up the outside black wire to the high speed on the controller and call it a day? or should I connect the middle black wire to the low speed side as well?

I currently dont have A/C installed on the car so I wont be using the blue wire at all.

I also have a real two speed fan I took off a T-Bird at the bone yard too.

Given the controller I chose should I have used that fan instead?

I know the fan thing has been beat to death, but my searches dont come up with any info for the 2SP controller Brian now sells........

Thanks

Jeff

I think you may have things a little mixed up.

The Mark 8 is a two speed fan (as I remember). One wire is slow speed, the other is high speed.

Fans aren't really designed to be "variable speed". That's done by the controller, and hopefully done correctly with PWM.

The DCC 2SP controller is not a "variable speed" or PWM controller. It's a controller for a two speed fan. It's similar to how most OEM fan controllers are. But, in an easy to use and HIGH QUALITY design. Note that most of the controllers (like you buy from Summitt) don't have the quailty in design as the DCC units do. Brian's products live/die by their reputation on the forums.

IMHO, *I* wouldn't risk MY $$$ engine to overheating by using one of those POS (other) aftermarket kits. I KNOW! I once ran those POS controllers and fans in my Cutlass. IMHO, one of the worse decisions that I ever did.

From the 2SP installation manual:
http://www.dccontrol.com/2sp.pdf

High Power Connections
The BATTERY + input should be connected byway of a proper sized fuse for the fan current rating to the battery positive
The LOW FAN output should be connected to the low speed circuit on a Ford two speed fan using a yellow butt connector
The HIGH FAN output should be connected to the high speed circuit on a Ford two speed fan using a yellow butt connector.
The negative input to the fan should be grounded to the frame or the battery.

Temperature Adjustment

The temperature is initially set to turn the low speed circuit on at 180° F, but can be adjusted +/- 30 degrees byway of the potentiometer. Each turn clockwise raises the temperature by 3 1/2 degrees, each turn counter-clockwise by 3 ½ degrees

looks like the 2sp controller should be connected to the high and the low speed wires. i don't think its a soft start but rather starts up at low speed and ramps up to high speed if the temps warrant it. i looked into this controller to run my contour fans but i wanted the pwm feature so i opted for flex-a-lite 33054 from summit. i am really pleased with it and i got it two days after placing the order.

good luck!!

Thanks guys,

I all ready have the controller and I understand the instructions...I guess I might should clarify my question some....My fan doesn't seem to have two speeds.......

I tested my fan by jumping it to the battery before I started trimming the shroud, there is NO noticeable difference in fan speed when I powered it up from one wire to the other.....then I read this on another forum:

(The Mark VIII fan is really a variable speed fan when used in a Mark VIII. From what i understang you want the two outer prongs for the hot and ground and the voltage is regulated by the Mark to control fan speed.)

So I'm thinking that using this fan I should wire the outer wire to the high speed and the middle to the low speed on the controller...

Did some quick checking (ever heard of Google? :))

From: Mark VIII Fan Wiring - TCCoA Forums
The 2 outside connectors are the only ones that are used. All Mark fans are single speed that is varied by the VCRM. There is no 2 speed Mark fans. Ford just uses the same plug as a 2 speed fan uses to save money.

So...
BOTH wires are the same.
You can not use the SP2 controller as a two speed controller on a MKVIII fan.

You'll want to either see about exchanging it with Brian, selling it on the classified (IMHO, your best bet), and then getting another controller.

You do NOT want to use the MKVIII fan as a single speed on/off fan!

Good Luck!

That's what I was concerned about.....I still have the 2 speed T-Sled fan here as well so I can use that one instead so the controller can do it's job correctly. Maybe at some point I'll upgrade to one of Brian's other controllers...

Not to thread jack....but along the same lines as the discussion...

I have a Mark fan in my 95. I plugged the harness in directly. The old fan would kick on with the ignition. Now the fan kicks on only around 180. (temp i have set with the SCT chip) So i'm assuming only the high speed is connected. seeing as theres no fan action below 180. Temps stay dead on at 180 with maybe 3-5+ degrees during hard driving.

Should i keep mine like this or is there a better way to wire this to a 2 speed factory controller?

Thanks,
Chris
