Sandblasting an upper intake?

good luck with that... that :poo: doesnt come off easy. better off spraying down with aircraft stripper and then scuffing.i just hosed mine down with brake clean and then painted it

I've never been comfortable blasting an intake. If you leave ANY of the blast media inside and it gets sucked down into your cylinders, it's only going to tear crap up.

So, I second the aircraft stripper. I've used it before, it's super easy and works great.

It's perfectly safe to sand blast an intake as long as you clean it out properly. The aircraft stripper will react with the paint later when you paint with it.

ive used it on my everything from my oil pan to all the sheet metal around my torque boxes. never given me an issue with paint.

clean the intake out, simple solution. not that there is anything wrong with aircraft stripper. But being paranoid of sand particles is ridiculous if you put in a little effort to clean out the intake well. To each his own, ive been fine with both methods

I would be a little paranoid. I'd think it would be pretty hard to get a piece of sand out if is was stuck somewhere in the bottom of the intake. I wouldn't be against sandblasting but I would be extra safe, I would make wooden blocks or something to seal it, especially when getting near the throttle body entrance. I wouldn't rely on painters tape or rags.

i just hot tanked it a few times before and after. obviously not something everyone has access to but i figured a little heat would open up the pores and help clear the sand out. never caused any issues, but like I said, its whatever you're comfortable with

Ended up using The aircraft stripper... Talk about a pain, I was pretty much high from being around it! I also didn't open my garage door.

I got it all painted and the plate with the 5.0 L V8 polished, and the back ground blue. I am hoping it turned out good

I have a friend who destroyed a brand new engine because he had an intake power coated and some media got inside. Started engine up and it ran great!!! For 15 minutes :(

IMO, it's one of those things that just isn't worth messing with, because the consequence of failure is just to severe. Aircraft stripper is easy enough, and I sleep easier knowing there isn't a tiny little ball hiding in there somewhere waiting for an opportunity to shank one of my cylinders!
