Classic Car Insurance

Canadians don't dislike Americans and your way of life. Ours on a day to day basis is not much different - a little less daily violence, no ICE rampages or bullies in head office. What we dislike is the appearance of apathy and ignorance of the American people in general of this bully (and his inner circle). Don't get me wrong, we respect the American people in general. I have met and worked with many Americans whom I respect. My wife was born in the US.

Now I'm probably going to get flamed by others here for these opinions, but I am just sharing my opinions because I was asked.

I did change my drivers license and all of my other cars were licensed in Florida... I think ( and my thoughts were) that without having to annually declare your registration ( and PAY MORE TAXES ) with a one time purchase Antique plate, it kinda fell through the cracks......
I do no other states have different programs for Antique and special plates.. Here in Florida its an annual fee and an ugly plate.... All the police ever did was give me a thumbs up when they drove by....;..
I understand. In Ontario, we have front and rear plates. My front plate fell off in a car wash 5 or 6 years ago. I never bothered putting it back on. I have driven around, beside, toward and past many police officers and no mention, comment or stop. I keep the plate in the car, just in case.

We have Antique Vehicle plates here. They were very common on almost any vehicle older than 25 years - especially collector cars. I have personalized plates that were gifted to me back in the 80's so I never bothered getting them. Up until a couple years ago when they changed to not paying annual fee to renew your registration (on personal vehicles) the Antique plates were $15 per year and regulator plates were $145. Most everyone with a collector car would get the Anitque plates. Only problem that most people never understood was by using Antique plates you were declaring your car an antique. An antique car, by definition, in the Canadian Highway Traffic act (over rides each provinces rules) says you can only use the vehicle to get to and from service, parades or a show where you are representing the antique authenticity of that vehicle. So technically if you made modifications to your vehicle it would not qualify as an antique and the special privileges it gets. So if I had my modified foxbody out on a cruise with Antique plates, any police officer could charge me with the incorrect registration of my vehicle (or some variant of that) because it was not factory correct in ALL ways and I was using it incorrectly. I just never wanted to take the chance. If I have seen 100 vehicles with these plates, only a few would have met the above criteria as far as vehicle or how it being used.

How are you folks coming up with your values for replacement cost? Receipts? Ballpark understanding of what it would cost to redo your car? With all my labor being done by myself, I’m trying to figure out an appropriate number to bump mine to.

It will still come down to how high the Insurance company will allow it without becoming unafordable

Has anyone insured a non running project car with a agreed upon policy?... I really need to get my 65 corvette project and the 83 mustang insured.. Not sure how any company will react to it... I have over 50K in the corvette project as it sits now...

I used the online Hagerty valuation tool.

When I called, they actually suggested more value than I was asking. No photos or receipts were needed. The 27k value wasn’t a concern for them at all but perhaps a value double or a little less may be treated differently.

As @limp said, it all comes down to a conversation with them, what they allow and what makes sense financially.

Nah, we all have opinions and we all love our countries. I will take you guys bordering us over most other countries on this planet. If we could just get the cartels out of Mexico it would be a pretty sweet continent.

I was joking man. I don't think you folks hate us. Our mainstream media would love for us to believe that though. I, as well as most on this forum, aren't gonna knock you for your opinions brother. Might yank your chain a bit, but it's all in good fun. Hope you have thick skin. We are all here for the Ponies!!

Haggerty actually has policies for non-running restoration projects.

I will check into that.. TY..... I know when I added the BMW " garage queen" ( which was a class of cars American Collectors offered) the discount was pretty good combined with the dodge.. I hope to see what I can do with the Mustang and the Corvette combined on an agreed policy...

I know these “best of lists” aren't gospel but thought it was a nice list referencing many of the companies out there with some pros and cons of each.
I am a grumpy old man boomer who thinks MOST of this crap is a scam in todays " wonderful modern" world..... BUT
Living in Florida has become a huge problem with insurance so I tried one of these and it cut my insurance on my 20 Chevy truck by 50% with, believe it or not, Geico... Been two years now and its actually decreased a few dollars.....
You never know, but advice I have lived on for 7 decades is " if it sounds too good to be true, it is".. So be smart....

I had Geico when I was in Georgia as they were the most reasonable when I was looking. Once I moved back to Iowa, Progressive was the most reasonable. I think it's a little funny how it seems the big insurance carriers are kind of regional.

Homeowners seems to be about the same. I had Farmer's in Georgia, got quotes here and it went to Allstate.

Multipolicy discounts didn't seem to help either. I tried State Farm for both as I have 2 life policies through them, it didn't seem to make much of a difference. I will say, though, that I didn't try collector car insurance through any of them, so I really have no idea if it would've had a bearing on anything else. Might be worth looking into, but I don't think I'd hold my breath....

On my insurance search ( netwallet I want to say???) Progressive was more than twice what the Geico quote was... It seems to depend on the person also.. On a side note I just paid off my 2020 Pickup through a local credit union here.... My Capital One credit card was all over it and they even reduced my fico score by over 30 points ( I was at 850) LOL I don't get it.. Grumpy Boomer says fk em all.....
