Fuel Gasoline-Tank leak

Hi,
I have a 98 Ford Mustang, V6. After replacing the fuelpump, i smell gasoline in and outside my Mustang. I even got stopped by a friendly driver behind me and he said, i am loosing gasoline in the curves, especially when i do a curve to the left. I went out of my car and looked under the tank, but i saw nothing, no leak or lake. I went back to my mechanic and he said, a seal/gasket/plasic thingy is broke. between the filler and lower tank-entree. But he could not name it. He don´t know how to call this thinggy. I live in Germany and i can order spare-parts from friends. But i have to name this spare-part. Can somebody please help and post some photos/ pictures from the tank-fuel-system or explosive diagrams, please?
Thanks for your help.

Hi,
Thank you....I guess that is the broken seal. "Fuel filler pipe seal" or "fuel tank filler neck grommet". A friend got a seal from a 1997 GT and one from a 2000 Mustang GT. Can i use this seal for my 1998 V6?

Try this on your own. Many auto parts websites have a "compatibility" list of other model that a particular part will work on (or interchange). www.oreillyauto.com is an example of such a web site. Look up the part in question and go to the "compatibility" tab. See if the other model years (application) also come up.

Rockauto also has this information under the "buyer's guide" tab.

A final suggestion. Go to car-part.com and look up the part in question. Make note of the other "applications" that come up as a possible "donor" for the part in question.

In that case wouldn't it be safer to order the part number that is specifically called out by the supplier?

In the case of the filler neck grommet it's not all that expensive of a part compared to the labor involved with pulling the fuel tank. IMO there's little benefit to be gained by using a part that's not specifically called out.

Or call the supplier of the part and ask them.

Now if you don't mind the down time, then take everything apart and just see if it fits. Make a decision from there.

Hint. It seems to me that if the hole in the gas tank is the same size and the filler neck is the same size it will interchange. If not, then it won't.

Finally i got the fuel tank filler neck grommet replaced. And now...Oh, what a wonder...The enginge trouble is gone...Its just amazing, that this little tiny hole in the fuel-system made such problems.... Not only loosing fuel and the gasoline-smell...the engine was running not properly...little shakes in idle ...and so on....
But now....the engine runs excellent....Thank all, for your help.....
