    Before you get a code reader, get a paper clip and pull the codes. The procedure is on here and it's easy to do.

    Based on this picture I found of E7TE heads, I think I have my answer. I guess they were pulled and machined for the studs at some point. Thanks for the replies guys.

    Well, the guy selling the shortblock isn't the one that went over my car, but yeah, I thought the same thing. I do have AAA, but I'll have to look into how far they'll tow with our plan:p. I have 10W40 in it right now, what brand of 20-50 would you recommend if I decide to run that?

    That's what I was thinking Scott, and I swear I tracked it down to the pass. valve cover with the stethoscope. I'm going to listen to the oil pan to make sure it's not traveling from the bottom end. If it's still up top, maybe a bad lifter? Pushrod? What else could be making noise up there?

    I'd check for an exhaust leak first. Get a mechanic's stethoscope if it's not the exhaust and poke around. I had ticking also and I need to get my rockers re-adjusted on cylinders 2 and 3.

    Okay maybe tree is the wrong terminology. There are vacuum lines that come into a 4x4 block by the passenger strut tower. I'm trying to figure out how these run into and out of that block. It's in that second picture I posted.
