Hi all thanks for the reply mp67 I am convinced that there is a *hardware* related problem with the clutch. You asked if I can get any gears at idle ... the answer is no. The only way I can select a gear is by putting the car in gear and with the clutch pedal depressed, start the car. Thre is...

    CAN'T GET ANY GEARS

Yes the gears will run through fine with the engine off. The gearbox was OK before I did the engine (4 speed top loader with 6 bolt bell housing and Hurst shifter). The cltch set was a new one ... just a standard duty one I assume .. from NPD & cheap. I haven't really disturbed anything on the...

    Charging Problem

I am just in the process of trying to get the alternator wired up to the regulator properly. The car used to have a voltmeter, but this has since been removed and I have found that the stator wire from the alt to the reg has also been removed. At present I can run another wire from the alt to...

Sick motor and even sicker owner.

Well ... I got the thing running today :D The problem was the rocker arm nuts were not going far enough on the studs (screw in) to engage the locking bit ... this was happening on several which were working loose and causing vales to not open when they should leading to backfires etc. As a quick...

I have just had the timing cover off my newly rebuilt 289 (to check cam timing) and I have put it all back together really nicely ... plenty of silicon to repair slightly torn gaskets etc. ... the only thing is that now I have the oil slinger from the front of the crankshaft sitting on my bench...

I have just checked and re-adjusted the rockers ... all was Ok except 3 were just a little loose. I have taken the front cover off to check the cam timing and that is ok too. When the car was running the backfire was quite regular as if it was just one cylinder .... if that means...

I have just installed the engine in my 65 289 after rebuilding it .... new pistons, cam, timing gear, lifters, valve springs, pushrods, oil pump, bearings, flywheel, clutch etc. I thought I'd done a real good job ... until it came to start up time. orange painted block

I guess by getting the average of the 2 figures (271 & 306) we get 288.5 hp which is just about 289 .... the numbers fit really well !! What I think 65shelby meant by 289HP was not 289 horsepower ... but 289 Hi-Po. I will take and post a pic of the block tomorrow as it looks quite an original...
