    Rotation Questions

What I should have asked is what will I need to change (water pump, radiator, power steering pump) going from a stock 289 to a new 302 or mild 347 (torque biased) roller crate engine? I'd like to use my fairly new 3 row rad, alternator, and power steering pump. (I am planning to get a new...

    Electrical Gremlin

I just replaced the turn signal/horn assembly on my 68. Not too bad a job. The toughest part was getting the wheel off. I had to use a puller to avoid damaging the bearing that holds the top of the shaft. I think the part was about $70 so if you're going to all the trouble to pull everythng...

    Rotation Questions

I am considering getting an FRPP 302 and I don't know if my 289 is considered reverse rotation. I guess it wouldn't matter except that I have power steering and I don't know if that will be affected by rotation direction. Or, if there is a better source for a high quality $4700 crate motor...

Found the Gremlin - need more help

I have a question. Finally found the electrical short that was shutting everything down. One of the two brass contacts in the steering hub for the horn got worn off/bent and was touching the wrong part. The little brass contacts appear to have worn down to nothing in 1 year. I am going to...

    Engine Mounting

KW crazy, Bonnet load ... took me a minute. Good humor.

    Thought I fixed it, but...

My '68 was not starting (no turn over, no noise as though the ignition switch was defective). So I replaced it along with the Starter solenoid. Started fine for a few days then yesterday I stopped at a stop sign, heard a click and the engine died. Started right up afterwards. I checked the...

How to install a radiator support to hood gasket?

Tim, thanks for the pic. I was thinking that the gasket was stock and might not require drilling. What you did looks great though and is certainly secure enough not to come off and get tangled up in the fan someday.

How to install a radiator support to hood gasket?

I have a new rubber gasket that goes on top of the radiator support and mates with the bottom of the hood when it is closed. I have never seen one installed. Anyone know how it is positioned and how the stainless staples are used? A picture would be ideal but words will help! Thanks.

    Oil for your Rear End

The first time my 8" was replaced with a 3.00 Richmond Gears/Auburn clutch style pack and Richmond gears, I used 80-90 Synthetic w/ friction modifier. After a year it started to chatter during turns despite attempts to use other gear oils and weights. I just installed a pre-built 3rd member w/...

    Dies immediately after releasing ignition

Since I had the new ignition switch I changed it out last night (10 minute job). Problem cured! Thanks for all of the good ideas.

    Considering rear end change

resto, I beleive the *waffle pattern* strengthening ribs were added to the 3rd member as a result of some failures of the earlier (65, 66), non-ribbed unit. Most of the sellers on E-Bay who seel the units already set up with posi and your choice of gears use the stronger ribbed pattern anyway...

    Dies immediately after releasing ignition

Well I replaced the starter solenoid about 6 months ago and it has run fine. I am going to swap in a good ignition switch tomorrow since I had taken it all apart anyway. Then if that doen't do it, I'll try Tim65GT's idea relating to a resisor. But, I spent time looking for it. I don't see...

    Dies immediately after releasing ignition

What resistor wire? If I remove the ignition switch, is there one on there? Thanks for the idea.

    Dies immediately after releasing ignition

Your opinion appreciated: My 68 fires quickly, but dies immediately upon release of the ignition switch from the start position. Could this be anything other than a faulty switch? Thanks.

    Considering rear end change

My guess is that you have an 8 inch rear end, but you need to confirm that unless you are considering changing out the entire axle. Going to a T5 (I just installed a TKO500 - similar) does not require that you go to a 9 inch rear end. If you plan on building a torque monster, you should go to...

    Considering rear end change

My mechanical skills are limited but I'm glad I did it myself, with only one exception. Lying on my back under the jacked up car (w/ jack stands) leaves a small area to wrestle with the 90lb. chunk. It almost tore my hand off at one point. Use a jack to raise the 3rd member into place...

    Considering rear end change

resto, I just bought and installed an 8 inch 3rd member w/ the later, stronger waffle pattern with 3.55s from Ironhorse 1968 on Ebay. It was about 7 bills delivered from Indiana to Ca, and runs smooth and quiet. Really woke up my stock 289.

CHOKE? WE DON'T NEED NO STINKING CHOKE!!!!!!!!!

Good point. I suppose it takes the same number of total revolutions to push a given volume of oil thru, whether it is at 850 or 1600rpms. The additonal wear of the starter/charging system is probably unnecessary.

CHOKE? WE DON'T NEED NO STINKING CHOKE!!!!!!!!!

D Hearne, I don't know if my thinking is sound on this, but when I used to use the choke on my Edel carb, the car fired faster but went immediately to a high idle (1600+rpm). This can't be good for a stone cold motor. I prefer to let it crank for 8-10 sec to build a little oil pressure and...
