    I agree with brian. With an AFR headed 408 and 5 speed I would definitely want a 9" with at least 31 spline shafts.

    The 8" can be built to take lots of abuse. BornInAFord was right about the webbed casings and 4 pinion spiders being stronger than the early non webbed casings and stock 2 pinion spiders. For even more strength go with a Detroit Locker. Ford 8" rears come with 28 spline axles as do many 9"...

    That does suck! I was wanting to see you get that 9 second time too. I have heard nothing but good things about Edge converters. Could a transmission failure have taken out the converter? Did you learn the cause of tranny failure?
