00 GT will not change to 2nd gear

I have a 00 GT automatic and drove it all day today without any problems. I went to go somewhere later and as I went down the street my rpm's just kept going higher without going into 2nd gear. Reverse, Neutral and everything work fine. When I get the rpm's up around 3500 if I let off of the gas it will drop into 2nd. Any ideas on what this might be would be great.

check the trans fluid?

How many miles on the car? Ever have trans work done to it before?

if the fluid level is normal then you need to see if there is any codes. report bakc here if you get codes.

follow up

The car has 52,000 miles I got it 3 yrs ago and never had any trans work done. I checked the fluid and it is fine. Im not sure how to find out about codes.

Try and see if you can make it shift doing it manually. I had one of my other cars do this. I called the transmission place that did the work and they asked me to try shifting it manually. They said that if I could get it to shift then it was a hose/wire that came off. It did shift and I took it back in the shop and they connected the hose/wire and everything was fine. This was an older car so it may not apply to your case, but I thought I would throw it out there.
