First off...New 99 GT LE 'vert owner here....excuse the newbie-ness

This Mustang is the first 5-speed car I have owned. I have driven a stick car before but not for an extended period of time....that being said heres my question.

I am wondering if the "bucking" I am getting on the 1-2 shift is either normal, a clutch going south or just my poor driving skills.
Doesnt seem like the engine is misfiring or clutch is slipping its just a violent 1-2 shift. All other gears are fine (2-3, 3-4 etc)

Its pretty painful to see my wife & kids look like bobble heads in the car :D

Thanks for any advice

Which clutch do you have installed? Some of the performance clutches do not have "slip" points. They engage all at once. This results in a harsh upshift.

Refined driver technique can improve the results (driver mod).

The reason for the bucking is that you let the clutch out either too high or low in the RPM's. Try and keep and eye at where you should be at in the next gear, and let the engine rev down a bit before you let out the clutch. - "Rev match"

There really isn't a set number. It's something you will need to figure out by feel on your own. I believe using 1000 rpm is a good starting point.

I like to shift at 3000 rpm and usually that drops me to around 2000 rpm. Push the clutch in, shift to third and gently let off the clutch. Wait until you are fully disengaged before giving gas. Sometimes if you hit the throttle too soon it can cause the bouncing.

Rev matching is more common on the downshift. I use 2000 rpm as my downshift trigger. If I hit 2000 in 3rd and am slowing, I'll push the clutch in, blip the throttle quick to 3000 rpm and let out. When you get better, you'll never even feel it other than the change in engine noise.

Just keep practicing and you'll get the feel for it. When I drive with passengers I try not to feel any up or down shift at all. But when I am alone....I get sloppy sometimes

Chris slowing down the shift as others mentioned will probably do it. Try to take more time to move the shifter from 1st to 2nd, if that helps good. If not see if you shift faster helps. It's all a coordination thing if you will...:nice:
