1/4 mile times

I'm new to this mustang stuff. I just wanted to ask... my 1/4 mile times seem really slow for what I have invested in my '88 GT. I have had it for two years and it is my first Mustang (first Ford really). I have a full exhaust, pulley kit, BBK air intake, a Hurst short throw shifter, and 3:73 gears. My ET times are in the high 15's and I am having a hard time lowering those times. could it be that the times are different from sea level for the altittude I am racing at ( 6500 ft above sea level)? Should I invest in drag radials? I seem to not get any traction at the line. Anything helps.

aod or 5 speed?? If it's an aod, thats your problem right there...aod's are dogs.

anyhow, it's likely the altitude...that'll KILL your times. try the conversion out..you'll likely find you're actually closer to the 14's than you think

I suggest M/T ET Streets as well. They will help get the car hooked up at the tree. IT will be a lot different launching the car with those vs. street tires, so get a lot of practice runs in and hopefully your E/T's will drop.

Also....most 88's don't come with MAF. They are Speed Density. However, being you are in New Mexico, it is possible the car came from Cali. and might have MAF on it. Check into that as well because converting to MAF makes the car respond better to the mods you have along with future modifications.

My car is all stock and it ran a 14.7, this was my first time racing ever. Once the track got sticky, even on street tires i bet i could have dropped my 60ft and ET by launching a little harder.

A 88 SD car should be a hair quicker than it's 89 MAF counterpart.

there is nothing in his list of mods that would make switching to mass air worthwhile. So long as he has a stock cam, or a speed density cam, Speed density will be fine.

I'm running gt40p heads, a ported gt40 (explorer) intake, full exhaust..headers,h pipe, catback, 1.6 roller rockers, 65mm throttle body, STOCK ho roller cam.

I'm speed density still and it handles it like a champ.

I do plan a mass air upgrade, however that's because I've got a tfs cam waiting for install.

Do not convert to Mass Air at this time. You don't have any mods that require it and converting now will make your car run slower.

I have virtually every bolt on you can imagine and still run SD and the car runs like a raped ape. I don't plan on converting until i actually need it (huge cam or supercharger)

I probably will buy some drag radials for next season. I do not have a mass air meter. Is the conversion worth it? I also heard that drag radials will trash my T-5.

You're gonna have to compromise if you want to drag race. If you want a drop dead reliable car, then get another vehicle and don't fix it up. If you're gonna race something, expect breakage.

Having said that, the true weak link in a drivetrain is supposed to be the clutch. If your t5 is strong, and you have a modest clutch, then the clutch should go first.

of course, you'll wind up breaking one or more of everything if you hit the strip on a regular basis
