I have a 69 coupe with the stock alternator and Im looking into doing the 1 wire upgrade but have read that the factory ammeter and/or alt warning lights wont work and was wondering why. I also read not to try to hookup the ammter wires up to the alt also and was wondering why. Does it fry the ammeter?

I was looking at the diagram below comparing the 1g alternators to 3g and they look to be wired in the exact same way with the exception that on is internally regulated. I dont see any reason why the ammeter wont work other than it getting fried for some reason. Looking the the 2 wires highlighted in blue, you can see that they both come out of the regulators I terminal.

Anyone know why the ammeter wont work. If its true that it doesnt work, is there any way to wire it so it does? I would like to keep all the original gauges functional and clean up the engine compartment at the same time.

mine doesn't either, I think the ammeter is run thruogh your volt reg harness and because you remove it with the 1 wire alt. I would think you could trace the wire and connect it but it will always have batt voltage even when the key is off.
