10w30 oil

i used to use 10w40 valvoline until i tore my motor apart a few weeks ago and found sludge buildup. i will no longer be using valvoline. i hear mobil is really good. i'm switching to synthetic after i get my motor back together.

the only downfall i've found with switching to a syn oil on a higher mileage motor is that it can sometimes create leaks in gaskets. i know it did on my old fox and some of my buddies as well.

sounds like yours is a new engine, but i'm just tossing it out there as a caution to others.

i recently just switched to the high mileage castrol stuff.

yeah i've heard that too, that's why i've never used it before. I'm about 90% done with doing a complete engine rebuild with a few upgrades, being the only reason why i'm considering synthetic. Everyone is saying to do it, so i probably will.

Then maybe switching to synthetic blend before the full fledged synthetic would be best if thats the case?

I used I believe the 10w-40 from royal purple for quite a while but after the prices got outrageous I went to mobil 1 synthetic 10w-30. If it's good enough for exotics then its good enough for my ride.

Whenever I first get a car, I start off with 10w30 and see how fast it eats/leaks oil. If it starts munching that, I bump it up to 10w40. The Notch consumes oil at a rate of 1 quart every 800 miles or so, and moving it up to 20w50 didn't do anything to slow the rate of consumption, but it does help keep the oil pressure up a bit more during the hotter months. Thus, I run 20w50 in the hottest months (May through September) and 10w40 the rest of the time.

The TurdBird recommends 5w30 from the factory, but at 122k+ miles, the motor isn't quite as tight as it once was. Thus, it gets 10w30.

Both cars get Castrol GTX High Mileage - just decent middle-of-the-road stuff. I'm kind of tempted to go with Mobil 1 synthetic in the TurdBird with my next change, mostly because I do almost all highway miles and (so far) it doesn't burn or leak any oil at all, so it'd be nice to stretch it out about 5,000 miles or so between oil changes instead of every 3,000 miles. (Mobil 1 has that so-called 15k-mile oil, but c'mon ... nobody makes an oil FILTER that'll hold THAT much crap yet for a 4.6L, do they? :) )

I am about due for an oil change. I usually use the standard 10w30 valvoline, but I was just wondering what kind of oil you guys use in your 5.0 ponies. Thanks

i use 5W30 Quaker Q full sythetic, Castrol Syntec or Royal puprple, actaully all three. in the summer an all Sytheitc as well-Just up the weight to 10W30.

Later Ant:nice:

I use Dollar General oil, $.99 a quart, whatever weight i can get since it's eventually going to leak/burn out anyways

When i get it changed it depends on what time of year it is. Typically though i use 10W40 Valvoline Max Life with a bottle of Lucas Oil added in.
