170 amp fuse for a 200amp alternator?

Hey there the biggest fuse i can get at all local shops is 170amp will that work on a 200amp alt of will it blow out?

Here's what you need to make it work.....

Use the holder and 200 amp fuse.

so does it have to be a 200amp Fuse, can it be 170?

It will only blow a 170 amp fuse if you pull more then that. I doubt you will pull more hten that. So try it out.

Hey there i got the fuse its a 175amp mega fuse its made by littlefuse, i just have to find a holder.

i have a a smaller fuse/circuit breaker and it works fine, like stated above as long as it dosnet pull more than that u'll be fine

Yeah, as said, it should be fine. If you actually pull 170 amps for the period of time required to blow a slow-burn fuse, you likely have other issues.

Can you get those wafer type fuses at a parts store? Advance didn't have any.

you want to run a smaller fuse than the rated output of the alt. I run a 150 amp alt and use a 125 amp fuse. If you match the fuse size (amp rating) to the alt's amp rating, then kiss your alt goodbye if it develops a problem.

To go one step further, as I am sure Scott did, you want to use a fuse that is rated for the weakest link in the system (which can be the rating of the alternator-to-solenoid cable).
If the fuse is rated less than the rating of the alternator, but the cable is rated for less than the fuse, the fuse might not save the day.

EXACTLY, I want to make dam sure if anything blows, it's just the fuse only. Don't need any melted cables or fried alternators. West Marine makes a very nice setup (what I used).

pepboys its where the rest of the fuses are not the car audio fuses are.
