the other day i was on the 91 freeay, and for anyone in SoCal you kno what thats like, and i was only moving 5mph at best, and i noticed my lights gettign real dim and my stereo turning on and off. then when i would accelerate the light got brighter and the radio would be fine. so then i started watching the volt meter, and when idleing the meter dropped to the left line, and when i accelerated it went back to the middle. so i got home and tested my battery and its putting out 19.5 volts. the indicator in the top is red, and as far as i kno it is the OEM battery. what will this do to my car?

Have your alternator tested.

Yeah your alternator is going, you can live on a limping alternator but it gets annoying, your idle is extremely low, and it shakes at light because its trying to sustain power...

are you sure its the alternator and not the battery? i thought if the battery was bad then the car had to rely on the power from the alternator, and at higher rpms the output from the alternator is higher = brighter lights and so forth? that sucks, alternators are a pretty penny...

it's the alternator... but considering the overcharge you will probably need both now.

With 20Vdc you're risking boiling the battery as well as frying other electronics in the car. I wouldn't drive the thing until the alternator is replaced.
