1966 Convertible, Back Up Light Issue

Hello all, new here and just working through threads. I am having a hell of a time replacing a bulb in the socket. It goes in correctly but will not turn into proper position. I have tried so many times that now the contacts on the bulb are scarred. Really? Anyone have this issue? Do I need to change the whole assembly? Really hard enough getting my fingers into the area to turn the bulb so wondering if I should take the whole thing apart.
It's a small and dumb issue I know but could really use a little help. Thanks.

What happens is the plastic /rubber coating over the wires on the back side gets stiff and will not let the socket push back far enough to let the bulb lock in place .I have pulled on the wires slightly while inserting the bulb and it usually allows the socket to move back just enough to get the bulb to turn and lock in the proper place .

Hey You, Jim, thanks for your advice. Greatly appreciate you reading my post and taking the time to reply. The assembly moves back and forth easily. I did what you said and still have no luck getting the bulb to lock in place. Bulb #1142. Also tried Bulb # 71004 and neither will lock in place.
Fat fingers do not help either. I am no gear head, just a guy who owns a nice car for now. I will continue to play around with it, hopefully I will get lucky. Again thanks for the help. R

It's smaller than an 1156? Mu fuzzy memory is telling me that the marker and backup lights on the '60s cars I was repairing in the early '80s used 1156 bulbs mostly, and the brake/turn bulbs were usually 1157s. The only difference being single or dual filament.

Hi, thanks for your reply. Everything I have searched tells me to use the 1142 bulb. I can get the bulb in, it just won't turn to stay in position.

It's a single filament bulb with two "ears" which are at equal but opposite sides of the brass portion of the bulb, correct?
If so, find an 1156 bulb and compare them?
If you have the power, post pics of the problem, it'll help immensely.

Try putting on surgical rubbur gloves should give you more grip on bulb and coat the base with vaseline carefull not to get some on bulb or fingers
