Hey guys, I have a 66 coupe with 2 pioneer 240 watt speakers in the package tray, hooked up to a 400w firestorm amp, hooked up to a jvc kr somethin head unit. My problem is that the speakers sound absolutely horrible! they snap crackle pop every two seconds, all crackling all the time, then sometimes power only goes to one speaker then if u put ur hand next to the speakers the second one turns on, remove it, it turns off...
Any suggestions? I didn't buy these speakers and amp and head unit, they came with the car, when I get enough money saved up I'm planning on putting sound dampening and getting the system in my sig. but till then I'd like to make these somewhat bearable.
Plus, does anyone know if you can hook up like an mp3 player straight to the speakers of the car? I have the splitter that splits from a headphone jack to stereo inputs. There is no aux function on the head unit itself.
Right now i listen to the radio cause I don't have any cassettes, I understand that radio is supposed to have some static but this is ridiculous, even the 300k 8 year old 4 runner has better fm than this.

first check the wiring- wiring from the head unit to the amp, and to the speakers.

I'd wire around the amp to test. run temp wires from the head unit (it has it's own power 95% of the time) to the speakers. see what happens.
still crap? speakers might be trashed.
plays well? amp might be trashed.

this is a simplification, but it'll get your started.

usually the rear deck speakers are rotted, so check there first and then check the wiring

If the speakers are good, check for a poor ground on the amp and head unit.

K, I couldn't really figure out how to wire the head unit to the speakers, so i tried again to wire a mp3 player to the amp, and saw that the wires were crossed from the head unit to the amp. When I switched them around and hooked it up to my mp3 player it worked like a charm. Sounds really nice for my purposes, probably even ruled out buying a new pair of 6x9s and kick panel speakers, i'm just gonna get a new head unit and a sub.
Thanks for all the help.
I used a Stereo audio adapter if anyone wanted to know got it from radio shack for like 5 bucks.

with a little work, you might get that head unit to work- they usually don't go bad- especially if you are using RCA jacks from the HU- the internal amps in the HU can fry, but the RCA out is usually ok.

but I bet you want an ipod-able HU... so do I.

Well I really do not like my current head unit, I really would like to trash it badly, cassette player.. thats like wtf! At first i wanted jvc's head unit with built in hd radio cause i listen to the radio a lot more than anything else. But JVC has given me a bad experience so far. I'll see if i can find a hd radio adapter add on thing and a nice kenwood head unit off craigslist or ebay or something. I'd like to mount it in the glove box to keep a stock look, but that will come when i gather up enough funds.
