1967 Cobra??

Hey guys, a friend was just looking at a Mustang and the owner told him it's a 1967 Cobra Coupe. I didn't think they made Cobra Coupes in 1967...

Either way it's not a bad deal, $700 is the offer. It needs bodywork (rust repair), and a driveshaft plus other things obviously for that price. But if it's really a cobra then $700 is an awesome deal!

I have't seen the car and don't have any pics, but he wants me to come look at it with him since I've owned a few. He tells me that the fender badges are cobras, but then someone could've put those on there. I'll get the VIN soon I hope so I can verify things concretely.


So I guess the question is this: Does anyone know of the top if this is bogus?

The cobra didn't come out till much later. Even the cobra jet wasnt there in 67...

Someone at a 7-11 parking lot tried to tell me mustangs didn't come in silver in 66, he then asked if I had a 454 in it. I said no, then he asked what kinda gear I was running. I said, "7.11's", and walked into the store trying not to laugh

This guy obviuosly wasn't really familiar with mustang heritage since he thought '67 was the first year! That shoulda been a clue to my buddy, but then when I laughed he didn't know why so I guess he didn't know either... I feel for the uneducated who actually buys this car thinking it's a real Cobra.

My g/f parents still try to tell me they had a purple and white Shelby with a white leather interior.I said no,it couldnt have been a Shelby, and rather then get into a argument, i let it go.I saw a picture it was just a purple fastback as far as i could tell. I wish they would understand I have been into mustangs for over 25 years since I was kid,si I know a little more then them.

I just love it when non-Mustang people start telling you about Mustangs. The BS just gets deeper by the minute. To them, all 289 Mustangs were "High Perormance 289's", every 302 Mustang is a Boss 302, Shelby valve covers make the motor a "Cobra engine" and all fastbacks are Shelbys. But all these are nothing compared to my favorite: the "I used to have one exactly lie that" guy. You know, the guy who tells you about the car he had in high school that was EXACTLY like yours...except for the color, and the body style, and the year. But other than that...

My favorite one was the guy who told me he crashed his 62 Mustang with a monster engine racing down on Glenoaks (use to be a common street here to race on). He said he rolled the car over and the only thing that saved his life was the roll cage and harness. He also told me the car had so much torque he bend the frame (Mustangs have frames ?... almost wish I'd said it.), this was like a month after the first Fast and the Furious came out. He straight stole that one from the movie lol.

What's almost as funny but sad in way is when I'm at car shows walking around and see a nice looking restored early model Stang, I started talking to the guy and in about 2 sec's it's clear the guy did zero work himself on the car. I noticed it had a T5 so i asked him what gear ratio he was running and his reply was , "oh it's just stock". It just seemed to me the guy dropped money on a car to show off which is fine...but didn't know really much about it...

Down to business.. as a matter of fact there where "Cobra coupes", to be more specific, 26 Shelby Trans Am GT 350 coupes were made in 1967, but to my understanding they didn't appear in the US market. (I dont know if thats what you where asking BlwnGazkit, I dont want to look like a smarta$$)

Its kinda unlikely that the guy is selling one of those for $700, I really think he doesnt know what he is taking about, but you should definitively check the VIN.

There are 14 to be know to exsist of those 26 cars, The Shelby Registry has them listed. I don't know if the 12 others are confirmed to be destroyed, or if there are still unaccounted for.
A friend of mine owns the car that was given to Bosse Ljungfeldt, and taken to europe after it's T/A duties was done. The VIN starts with 7R01K164xxx

If the VIN of the car is anywhere near that one, you're on to something. I could give you the last digits, but I have to be careful with that information.

I had no idea that Shelby had made Cobra Coupes..... WOW, Learning something everyday!

I'll definately go take a look at the vin...

Who knows, the guy might not know what he's got! Course then I'd feel like I was shafting him for buying it for $700....

I saw a good one while back

I was at a car show and was looking at a guys 66 mustang, it was a very nice car....but, he told me it was numbers matching, had a 289 Hi-Po in it. But, get this it was a T code car (6 cyl) and it still had the 4 lug wheels on it.

And yes, stupid me pointed it out to him, he walked off with his head hanging.....oops.

To make this even funnier, the guy won the show, it was small, about 30 cars.

OOOhhhhhhhh, Hell Yes! I try really hard to be complimentary to anyone's car, so why is it that so many friggin' know-it-alls try just as hard to point out every single flaw in MY car? You know what I'm talking about, right? "My car had the big-block, my car was even straighter than yours, mine had the deluxe interior, but if you're happy with the bench seats, that's ok, too" But, then again I built my '68 for my enjoyment and to have something fun to drive with my son, not to impress somebody I don't even know.
