I have a 1967 mustang with a rebuilt 302. I want the exhaust to be louder? i mean really loud, im talkin Eleanor off of gone in 60 seconds loud....how could i do this without it sounding like crap on a stick.??

How was that car loud? There's no way you could tell it was loud from watching the movie, I thought it sounded pretty normal. I guess you just assume it's loud because it is badass?

Anyways if you like loud and growly I like the glasspack followed by a free-flowing muffler on a set of four cylinders - one pack and one muffler per pipe on a dual system. I've got that system on my 1.6L 4 cylinder and it's louder than El seemed to me, and rather deep and growly for such a tiny motor.

You didnt say whether you want "good" loud or irritating loud. I'll assume you meant irritating loud since this is a newbie highschooler type question that could have been asnwered with a simple search. Go to Kragen and get some 19" Cherry Bomb glasspacks. They sound like ass, but are loud like you want and will only set you back $30-40 for the pair.

Well he did say "not like crap on a stick" but I think he means tone and you mean volume. I'm of the same opinion as you - it's one thing to stick your finger up at the establishment by having a politically incorrect amount of exhaust volume and another to be labelled a wanker by everyone you pass because of a ludicrously loud system.

Well, "crap on a stick" to me means stock manifolds/cam/heads to open dumps with no crossover or mufflers. I dont remember the remake GISS Eleanor being loud, so I had to set a baseline somewhere based on the context. I for one am going to cut up my '89 GT's Flowtech o/r X-pipe and put it behind some longtube headers going into either long glasspacks or regular straight through mufflers.

yea i was just wondering, because i have seen many 5.0 mustang fox bodys that sound awesome. And i have never asked any of the owners what type of exhaust system. I do know that one person had flowmaster exhaust (i think he removed the cats also) and completely removed the tailpipe after the muffler...is that a bad idea?

If the exhaust ends under the car it make for a loud interior. My brother has bullets on his fox w/o tailpipes, and the radio is almost useless. He wants to pipe it to the bumper and get some of the noise out from under the car. Bullets are cheap and loud, but the sound is nice. Then again his is a high compression 347 so it will sound a little different from a stock mild 302. I prefer to not have every cop with in a mile look for me when I push on the pedal.

Mufflers are only about 40% of a great-sounding motor. To get that nasty sound, you need high compression and lots of camshaft overlap, neither of which today's gas would tolerate. Try big exhaust (2 1/2" and up) and Flowmaster 40 series, but don't be shocked itf the car actually gets slower.

Jesus.... no offense to "Gonen60".. but you're really not helping my side of the story when some of the guys say that Eleanor builders are inexperienced newbies. You could have at least worded your post like you weren't 16.

The sound of Eleanor was of a big block 428PI engine. Volume is based off of your TV or surround sound in your house. A 302 will not sound like a 428... but it will sound like a nice V8 with the proper setup. Hence me building up a 428CJ engine for my clone of a clone.

Go online and buy some mustang books or just keep reading through these threads.

I don't know how many movies I have seen where a 2 stroke sound is put in with a 4 stroke motorcycle. You never know if the sound you hear is the actual car, bike, actor singing, etc. Motors in different tune do sound different even with the same exhaust.

Zookeeper is right as usual. To get the high performance sound you need more than sheer volume. I drove an extremely mild 289/2V with open headers (was taking it in to the shop for connection to the pipes) a few years back, and while it was loud as hell I would not say it sounded very good.

first off, i am really not far from the age of 16.....so if i type like i am younger, then that is why. ALso, i was just curious about the sound of a car. I am not trying to duplicate an eleanor mustang. I just want the best sound from a 302 engine.

Guys he is a kid with a question don't criticize him for it. I was 16 barely 17 when i first got on here and was always treated well now im 18 and still love it here. Let's do the same for him.

Anyways the answer to your question is basically that every engine is different. To get that badass rumble loud sound you need a cam and high compression like zookeeper said. The cam gives you that chuggedah chuggedah lopey idle. Whereas the high compressoin gives you that crisp sound. If you want loud I recommend Spintech prostreets and a set of headers. I redid my whole exhaust to a 2 1/2" with long tubes and spintech prostreets and it got a lot louder and the x pipe gave it that race car sound. The spintechs in conjunction give you a loud slightl tin sound similar to a cam at idle, and due to their design really wind up loud when you get on it. I hope this answers your question thoroughly.

Hmm now that someone's mentioned it, I think the thing I love most about engine sounds is the high compression rattle (I guess). Like top fuellers. How every combustion event sounds like that cylinder is on the verge of exploding and killing us all lol.

My Fox has Flowtech shorty headers, Flowtech offroad X-pipe(true X-pipe like a Dr. Gas), and Flowmaster American Thunder cat-back. The Flowmasters made it like stock, but louder. The X-pipe changed the tone/increased volume, but you could still tell it had a stock cam. The biggest improvement came with the Edelbrock heads and Crane cam. Now it sounds knarly. You most likely do not want to dump the exhaust in front of the rear axle. It drones out alot of the good tones and makes more noise in the car. I have sound files of the stock engine with stock H, X-pipe, and the modded engine with X-pipe of you want for comparison.

BTW, I would give anything if I could make my car sound like Eleanor! That scene where Memphis is pulling it out of the garage at the start of the chase scenes is ALWAYS played at full volume at my house! I'll bet I've seen that movie close to 100 times and that scene STILL gives me chills. Wicked, wicked, car...
