Guys, i have owned a 66 fastback (stupidly sold it for a 95 gt vert). I missed the old one so much that now I am looking at a 1969 fastback. What do I need to check on the 1969's for problems. the car looks really good in pics, 351W with FMX trans. Any advice on '69s problems, costs etc would be appreciated before I travel to check this thing out.

My ultimate plan would be to make this a very nice muscle car, not trailer queen, but a nice performing, solid cruiser, with the right sound and stance.

Thanks

Sam

Look for rust on shock towers, lower door, lower finders front and back, inside the trunk (look under the carpet) and around the rear glass at the bottom. It’s a poor design around the window and a big trouble spot if you ask me. I had rust there that could not bee seen till I removed the window trim.

Post the pics if you can.

The biggest pitfall in the 69/70' model years are the additional expense of just about all their parts. Granted availability is not as much an issue as say the 71-73' model years but it's lesser than say the 65-68' parts availability. It is unfortunately though the most expensive year to buy parts for. As an example, take a look at the prices of things like dashs and weatherstripping in comaprison to all the other model years and you will see that they are double in many cases.

Other than that all the usual trouble areas should be observed the same as any model year Mustang. In addition to the areas Timmy mentioned, you should also pay particular attention to the cowl, if it's a V8 check to see if it's a conversion or not and if so was it done right. The glue in type windows are another example of a specific 69' problem as well.

front floor boards are also a common problem on the 69's, probabaly because of the glue in glass, when they fall down it laways seems to rain that night.

FMX is a decent tranny, but from a performance POV, they are HEAVY, with alot of parasitic drag. Fine for a cruiser or weekend warrior, but definately not what you want for a regularly raced car.
