1970 TIMING COVER POINTER

I have a 1970 type aluminum timing cover for my 351W block. I'd like to put a 69 water pump on it so the bottom hose would be on the passenger side. Are there any timing pointers that would bolt on to the drivers side of the cover or would I have to make my own? If there are what would they come off of?

OK BullittStangV8, it looks like it's up to you and me. I've checked a 67 Fairlane 289 and a 69 Cougar 351 and both have the cast in pointer on iron covers. I'm wanting to keep my aluminum cover and not have a cast iron one. I know where some old trucks are and I'm going to go look at them in the next few days. I'll let you know if I find something and would appreciate it if you let me know if you find anything.

I left my old pointer on it. Very hard to see but with the hose off, I lined up the timing mark. Then I took a piece of aluminum and cut and bent it so that it would bolt to one of the timing cover bolts on the other side. My balancer is marked at 270 dg. I bent the alum. and shaped the end to more of a point. Then bolted it to the cover and I had to do a little tweaking, but got it to line up real nice. Now I can time from the other side.

Good tip jasonn. That's a good way to see if the other side is set correctly. If I can't find one I'll make one.

yea it looks like ill be trying to make one as well...What would be material/thinkness to make out out of? Its crazy that all the part shops I look at only have timing pointers for the passenger side. I have a part number for a driver side one, but they are no longer in production from ford?

Stainless steel would probably be the best but aluminum or mild steel would also work as long as you could bend it. It would have to be thick enough so that it wouldn't bend too easily. I would think the thickness should be at least .030" if not a little thicker. I may go with steel about 1/16" thick and weld it with the bends where I want them.

I've got a stick welder that I've had for a long time. When I was restoring my son's 64 1/2 about 10 or so years ago I bought a Lincoln 110 mig. I use it quite often and haven't used the stick welder since I bought the mig. I keep the stick welder just in case I have to weld something real thick but that's never happened. I love my little Lincoln.
