My father in law has a 1971 fastback he's had since he was a teenager and we were thinking about getting it back in good shape.

It's a 390 4 barrel, 4 speed. Grey, with red interior.

Right now, it's sat in his barn since the 1980s and we wanted to know what the first things are to do to get it alive again.

The engine is not seized, has many leaks, mice have thrashed the interior, electrical and plumbing is probably corroded/dry-rotted....

Where is a good place to look or what suggestions do you guys have when starting a project like this?

Thanks!

Well, to be honest... it's like restoring any other car. You basically take everything off/apart, clean it up, and put it back together. Sometimes you can take shortcuts, depending on what you want to final outcome to be and how good of shape the vehicle is to begin with.

1st step is to pull everything off and fix rust damage.

Are you sure it's a 390 car? 69 was the last year for the 390 in the Mustangs.

I think that is what he said. I don't doubt you....it could have been swapped out, too.

If I grab the VIN, do you know where I can have it decoded to get all the original equipment?
