1973 302 Intake what is the metal plate for

What is the metal plate for on the back of the intake. Will it run with out it.

Alex I'll take small block Fords for 200$ ( you didn't say what engine)
Is it the Heat riser cover? Yeah it will run with out but why? Probable less detonation with it in place when good and hot outside.

Was going to change intakes to this one. The old one as a plate on the back was not sure if the new intake need it.
