Bought a Mustang II, was told its a 1978 King Cobra and I'm thinking its not. Can someone decode the buck tag and tell me what I have and what the exterior color is supposed to be? Any help would be great. Car has been repainted and the vin# on door tag doesn't match the tag on dash or buck tag.
VIN# 8F03F141778
Buck Tag - 141778 F 69F 0 375
9D AC A
ST TRF DRM
V8 SP FDS

It's not an original King, there would be a KC on the buck tag. But I think it's a Mach 1. I believe the body code 69F is for Machs - they were the only ones that had their own body code. I'll have to dig my book out tomorrow to confirm and get the rest for you. And like Pete says - share some pics! Everyone loves pics!!

I looked for my book really quick before I left for work this morning but it wasn't where I thought it was. In the meantime, here's a link with an unofficial code list that might help some.

The Mustang II Organization

The Mustang II Organization, Since 1997. Home of the Mustang II and Lost Pony Gallery, The Message Exchange, and now The Official and Original Registry
www.mustangii.org

Here is what can be decoded from that list:

Buck Tag - 141778 (consecutive number)
F (1976/1977?)
69F (Hatchback/fastback)
0 375 (?)
9D (?) [Edit - maybe it's the paint code? 9D is for white.]
AC (Air conditioning)
A (Light group?)
ST (Stereo)
TRF (T-tops)
DRM (Dual remote mirrors)
V8 (302)
SP (1977/1978)
FDS (Fold down seat)

As for the VIN, 8F03Fxxxxxx:

8 = 1978
F = Dearborn
03 = Hatchback/fastback (This would be "05" if it was a Mach 1.)
F = Engine code (302)

You can enter the VIN in this decoder to get that information:

Mustang II Certification Label Decoder

Looking at body codes, it appears that 69R is the code for the Mach 1, 69F is just a basic hatchback code that would mean it's anything BUT a Mach 1.

I hope this helps answer your questions. AND - welcome to the site!!

Oh, just thought of this - I'd venture a guess and say if you pulled back the carpet somewhere you'd see what color it was. I'm guessing it's not a rotisserie restored car....

Looked at the codes and wondered what 9D might be - it could be that it was the paint code. 9D is white per this site:

1978 Color Codes - Ford Paint Cross-Reference

1978 Ford Paint 3 Paris Blue, 1C Black, 1N Dove Gray, 1P Medium Gray, 21 Red, 2B Bright Red, 2M Dark Red, 2R Bright Red, 2U Lipstick Red, 34 Medium Blue, 3A Dark Midnight Blue, 3E Diamond Blue, 3G Bright Dark Blue, 3U Light Blue, 3V Bright Blue, 46 Dark Jade, 5M Medium Chestnut, 5Q Dark Brown...

Found my book. It really doesn't help much with the buck tag as much as it would if you had the actual door tag, but maybe this can help confirm some of what I listed earlier.
