Okay so I have a 1986 Mustang lx vert that I bought as a project car about a half a year ago. The main problem was that it ran like crap and didn't stay running when first purchased. So far, things I have tested/replaced were:
1. Spark plugs and spark plug wires. (Brand new)
2. Distributor cap and rotor. (Brand new)
3. Ignition coil. (Brand new)
4. TFI Module and pick-up coil. (Brand new)
5. EGR valve. (Used off other 86' Mustang but functions properly)
6. All new vacuum lines (dry-rotted)
7. PCV valve, grommet and filter (Brand new)
8. 8 OEM 19#hr Fuel injectors (Brand new)
9. Fuel pressure regulator (Brand new)
10. Fuel filter (Brand new but ran a small amt. of old gas diluted with 91 octane)
11. IAC valve (Used off other 86' mustang/not sure if functioning properly)
12. Reverse light switch (Brand new)
13. Has no cats but still has two o2 sensors in off-road h-pipe (Had when purchased)
14. Heater core (brand new)
15. Brand new front fenders
16. Brand new front bumper
17. Brand new Harwood 2in. cowl induction hood
I also tested for electrolysis in the cooling system: voltage was less than .10 volts (Nothing to worry about)
Things i'm thinking on checking/fixing/replacing:
1. Ignition solenoid
2. Starter
3. Fuel pump
4. Fuel pump relay
5. Carbon canister
6. Speedometer gear/cable (stock 2.73 gearing, 7t drive gear/16t speedo. gear?)
My problem is that it only starts when cold. When it starts cold, it seems to idle decently, but it runs quite rich. It hesitates and backfires when accelerating more than normal. Sometimes it stalls when coasting in neutral. This is actually my first car and I go to automotive school and I pay peopl to take me when I rather drive myself. The car isn't in bad shape (minimal rust, straight frame, old worn down top, cosmestic stuff. The passenger compartment has wires and such dangling from the dash, but all are connected properly. I have come down to this and now i'm stumped, my knowledge is limited. If anyone would be so kind and help me out, i'd much appreciate your time and effort! Also, I'll try to help you as well in the future.
