i might have an oppertunity 2 get my hands on a 1960's stang( i allways wanted 1) my guestion is how much work is it going 2 be to put my motor ,tranz, drive shaft, and rear in that car???
if not what is usually done??
and correct me if i am wrong the older cars pre 70 dont need emitions??
There are a lot of 60's Mustangs running around with 5.0 drive trains in them, but I can't help you with what's necessary to make it work beyond the obvious. You'll need the computer, and other electronics as well as an electric fuel pump and the associated pumbing to make an injected engine work in a non-injected vehicle. As always, the devil is in the details and you can expect to spend twice as much as you first thought to make it all work (at least).
As far as emissions go, up until 1970 the only emissions required was a PCV system and I don't think even that was necessary until '68 or '69. Until then the oil filler cap was just vented to the outside. I'm old enough to remember when PCV systems were first installed (and how hated they were at the time), I just can't remember what year it was.
A guy i work with has a '65 fastback with a 92 5.0H.0. in his car. I'll ask him for some tips on Monday..
Smog/Emissions were introduced in 1974 with the advent of unleaded gasoline. Your car doesn't require smog but the state you live in might require you to keep the smog stuff when you swap since the motor you are taking came from the factory with it. I'd check with the DMV before you get too far along.
Trust me, this guy didn't spend a fortune. Right now his car is in pieces so I might be able to talk him out of some stuff that you could end up needing (if he doesn't plan on putting it back together)
