1996 Cobra Won't Go Into Gear

Hey y'all, new here and just got my first mustang today. Well here we go.

I was driving it home today and everything seemed fine. Clutch seemed hard to press but it went into gear and shifted fine. I came to a stop light, went to put in 1st and take off, But the car would not go into any gear. Fiddled around and it finally went in. Now the car is in my drive way and won't go into gear. Now if I turn the car off It will go into gear. Also if I start it while in gear,it will move. So if I start it in 1st it pulls forward, if I start in reverse, the car will go backwards. Also once started the car will go into other gears.

Can anyone offer any advice?

On the bottom of the trans unbolt the inspection plate for the shift fork. Have some one step on the clutch and see how far the fork moves or if it's even moving at all

I will as soon as I get a chance to Jack her up.Lol. I traded my 6.5 4x4.highland my driveway has 1/4 inch of ice. So she is stuck until I can get her in the cave.

So what will I be looking for. Thanks

Forks would be my guess as well.

Does it have an aftermarket shifter or stock? Sometimes the stops may need an adjustment too but like I said, my guess is forks are bent.

No no, bad clutch cable, or too loose of adjustment...the fork is just fine.

I hope the fork is just fine. I'm not very informed in the clutch and transmission area. But I thought the shift fork was internal, inside the granny. Did you mean clutch fork. Cause I thought the clutch fork would be accessible without dropping the trans. Once again I am naive on this subject. But thanks for the help.

If any of this helps. Before this happened the clutch pedal to me felt heavy, it was hard to push to the floor, but it shifted good,

While the t45s can have internal.fork issues, it would be difficult to.shift too with engine off if there was internal issues..stiff clutch and difficulty shifting mean your cable is.misrouted, going bad, miss adjusted, or worst case (not likely) bad pressure plate on clutch

Grab the clutch pedal and pull upwards. Then push it to the floor. Hopefully you hear a click indicating a small bit of slack has been taken up. Try it out again.


Issue is clutch not disengaging all the way if the trans will go into gear at a dead stop. The cable is possibly stretched

I did pull it up and the pushed to the floor. It came up about a half inch or so. I didn't here any click sounds though

What I would do is, check to see if the shift fork is moving and how far it's moving. Then take the cable off the shift fork and see if the cable can freely move, might be bound up some where or frayed inside the plastic or the plastic might be melted some where causing the hard pedal and possibly the shift fork not to move as much as it needs to. If the cable moves freely then move your shift fork, it takes a pry bar and some strength to move it. If it can not move a lot or not at all, something is wrong internally with the trans. Also if you have an aftermarket shifter make sure the shifter limit screws are set correctly, it can cause you not to go into gear. That hard clutch pedal will break your stock clutch quadrent or your cable.

What does your clutch pedal feel like? Often a clutch that is too loose will have tons of slop at top of the pedal and it won't be going to get Stiff until the actual disengagement point how far do you have to push down on the clutch.until it gets stiff and begins to disengage?

It's what ever at this point. She is just going to get torn apart and I'll be getting rid of the 46 and the t45. I'm either gonna put a 5.0 in her or a 351. Dependin on which one will be dependent on which tranny. I did want to have some fun in her but. I'll get what I can out of what I got and go another route. We will see which route. Once figures are better put together.

Well. I'm looking to turn this car into a track car, maybe some summer road driving but not much.lol. I'll keep my street car to a car the actually hooks, turns and isn't so heavy. Something that is foreign.lol

What might this be.notice it not attached to anything and runs down and into the firewall. I'm assuming this is my problem
