In 2008 I received a bodywork estimate for $1,124.68 and had a transmission fluid change. The Ford Factory and Dealership VIN number on my documents and the estimate for the insurance stated an overdrive 5-speed automatic transmission. At the time, my father and I received many phone calls from the managers asking if they could purchase it for double the book price, plus $3000 for another car. I heard Ford was testing the 1st domestic 5-speed automatic transmission. Any thoughts?

The ford ranger got the first production Ford-built 5-spd auto in 1998 model year with a variant of the 5R44/5R55. First 5-spd auto on any domestic vehicle. It was a variant of the 4r55 which previously came on the Ranger, and the A4LD. Essentially the 5-spd was developed on and for the Ranger.

No version was in the Mustang until 2005 after Ford expanded the trans lineup with the 5R55S to a few other vehicles around 2002 (thunderbird and lincoln LS).

Most likely, it was just a typo on the insurance paperwork. As to why dealers called on it? No clue.
